Title: America and fascism now
Post by: Mike Cl on December 22, 2021, 11:14:21 AM
America is now in fascism’s legal phase
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/dec/22/america-fascism-legal-phase

The history of racism in the US is fertile ground for fascism. Attacks on the courts, education, the right to vote and women’s rights are further steps on the path to toppling democracy--
“Let us be reminded that before there is a final solution, there must be a first solution, a second one, even a third. The move toward a final solution is not a jump. It takes one step, then another, then another.”

I hope we have not totally gone down the rabbit hole.  But I really do fear we have crossed the line and can't make our way back.  We have become the arch enemy of WWII.

That article is very interesting.  It mixes hard facts and speculative fantasy in such a fine blend it is hard to know exactly how to pick it apart.

I'll try to point out a few things that can be actually sussed out of the article.

Of course no discussion of fascism can occur without discussion of the "big lie", such as how Trump said the 2020 election was stolen, or how Hillary said the 2016 election was stolen.  Oops, the article only mentions one of those for some reasons.  It occurs to me to wonder why one of those examples would be excluded as if it doesn't even exist.  It didn't even make the list of "people will say this is an example and this is why it isn't" mention, it made no mention at all.

He spends quite a bit of time talking about the normalization of political violence, and uses Kyle Rittenhouse as his only real life modern example.  Every other example is at least 30 years old, most far older.  However over the last 4 years we saw lots of examples of the normalization of political violence, from people dressed all in black telling us that words directed at them were violence but violence from them is speech.  Those weren't mentioned in the article.  He does talk about black people protesting, but not about white people dressed in black rioting.  In fact, he condemns noticing that Antifa are a bunch of violent shitheads by calling such noticing "demonization".

"Hey that guy just set a building on fire"
"You're demonizing him."

I do believe there is a strong fascist strain in the US body politic, and we've seen it ever since a modified cold virus appeared and gave those who want to control everyone else an excuse to do so.
