A lot of that shit ends up being designed by a committee. And often its a committee that is led by someone which no one else on the committee wants to disagree with for fear of causing harm to their own long term career potential.
Those things are that way because they have to prove that they are child proof. Too bad that sometimes means they are human proof in general.
