The orthodox commentary on this, ties it to the disciple-guru relationship. And relates that to Gita IV.34 and Gita II.54ff and Gita XIV.21-27
This guru relationship is also seen in Buddhism, Early Christianity, Early Rabbinic Judaism and Sufism.
