My pets have always been named of course, but I almost always end up talking to them using a nickname, which seems to come out of nowhere and has nothing to do with their given name, and the nickname attaches itself to my pet by gravity or some other unexplainable force that I don't understand.  Our first golden retriever was named Tucker, but one day my wife called him Rue, and that name stuck from then on.

My mother's cat and my own cat.  But my cat is out in the alley, where she isn't supposed to be.  My mother's cat is safe at home.  Punkin (my cat is all black, so for Halloween) and Teeny (my mother's cat is an orange cat, but his head was small for his size when he was young.

Our last cat was Dewy--ruler of the house for over 21 years; and the house if much poorer for his absence.  Now have three dogs--all rescue, so they came to us named already.  But we did not keep any of those.  A little mutt named Honey; she looks like she is white with honey spilled all over her; and she is a honey.  Like SGOS, nicknames just seem to drop from above, and her's is Bunny--of course.  A little Chi named Marco.  Marco Gigo--for Ed Sullivan mouse, Topo Gigo.  And Yankee (yep named for the baseball team--long story) who is also called Doodles.

When a furry child enters our lives we don't name them right away.  Sometimes the names we think would fit, just don't.  Marco came to us from a foster home named Peanut.  He hated that name--and so did we.  So after a couple of days, he was named Marco and took to it right away.

I like you calling them furry child. I do think of my cat as much a member of my family as any other. Infact, she more then any, becauee she really felt like she choose me as her owner, instead of one my parents choose.

Yeah, cats are like that.  They own the owner, so to speak.  They want things the way they want them and they tend to like who they want to like.  I really, really miss seeing him sitting on my old computer 'screen' watching me while I was on the computer.  And climbing in my lap whenever he wanted.  I do love dogs as well.  They are more child-like than a cat; but they all become an vital part of the family.

I don't have any pets, of my own. But I always give my sister's pets a nickname. She has a male cat that is declawed and neutered. I nicknamed him "Kittius Declawdius Catamus." It's his gladiator name, because he was found as a tiny kitten in the bushes, but he is all cat. He's tough enough, even without his claws and balls, to rough-house with the two dogs, who are just a little bigger than him.

The dogs I call "Muttlets."

I always thought a great name for a dog would be the classic "Fido," with a new spelling: "Phideaux."

That or else, "God" because it's "Dog" spelled backwards.

My cats were named by my parents.

If my gf and I ever get a cat and it's a girl I'd want to name it Kazazi, after a cat-like alien creature from a sci fi book I liked when I was younger.

Not sure the gf would want that though.

I don't name my pets because I've only dealt with used dogs for the past 12 years. Retired racers come from the factory with names so they already have names by the time I get them.

We have a habit of getting rescue dogs and they usually come with names.  But we ignore that and give them a name they like better. :))

Kazazi was an osbork. Which I think looked Like a panther but with a strong, study hook on it's tail; used to clamp on to objects to defy THE heavy winds of coriolis, her homeplanet which was in constant storm.

And they were quite intelligent, having culture, art and could build stuff.
Also, they were telepathic.

My parents have adopted a couple dogs from shelters and they were renamed without difficulty.  One was a pretty derpy black lab/golden retriever mix who would probably respond to Bilbo Baggins if your body language was convincing enough.

The cat I adopted in October has been named Althea, after the Grateful Dead song (http://artsites.ucsc.edu/GDead/agdl/althea.html).  She's an utter sweetie:

(https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5734/30727959986_2a9c440053_b.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/trdsf/30727959986)

My previous cats were Random (https://www.flickr.com/photos/trdsf/376681168) and Mavis (https://www.flickr.com/photos/trdsf/374716748).  Mavis was pre-named and given to me on the provision that I keep the name Mavis, which seemed to suit her well anyway.

Random, however, has an entirely weirder tale to the naming of the name.  He was had in the con suite at Ohio Valley Filk Fest in 1992.  I had gone in looking for the friend I had attended the convention with, and she had this big orange cat in her arms and my first thought was Aw, shit.  She wants another cat in the apartment.

She handed him to me.

He had a purr like an Evinrude outboard motor.

And the next words out of my mouth were, "I guess I need a name for my cat."

At a convention, this is the functional equivalent of saying, "I need an ad hoc cat naming committee, stat!"  Immediately, about five people surrounded me, all trying to think up names for this big orange tomcat.1  Because of his color, someone suggested 'Amber', and then someone else pointed out that 'Amber' was more of a girl's name and this was definitely a boy cat.  Somewhere to the side I heard "Amber... Amber... Amber... Oh!  Nine Princes in Amber (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine_Princes_in_Amber)!  Prince Random was a redhead!"

And so he became Random.

Lesson Number One about cats: never, ever, ever give them a name they can live up to.  :D

1: 'Big orange tomcat' turned out to be 'huge orange kitten' -- he was only six months old when I got him and he was already big for a cat.  He got huge.

Back in the day (early Dr Who) you could name your cat "Dr Who Companion Of The Week" if it was an easy screamer ;-)

Though I've had cats since 1976, I'll mention the ones at the current forever home...  Skeeter (for mosquito because he kept at my feet in gratitude), LC (for Little Cow), Ayla (after the character in 'Clan of the Cave Bear" book), Iza (another CotCB book character), Marley (after Bob) from the lady I adopted him from (and I decided that was a good name).

You can read about the last (current) 3 at http://marksmews.blogspot.com/  New readers always welcome.
