Title: The order of ignorance
Post by: RCnal on April 08, 2016, 12:52:15 PM
I'm curious to how everyone would rank the most misguided people on the planet in terms of stupidity and danger to the planet.

Groups I'm talking about would include;
Theists
Anti-Vaxxers
Racists
Homophobes
Flat Earthers
Pro-Lifers (Or Pro Choice, your call, I won't judge)
Liberals, Conservatives (Your call)

If you have any other ideas, please post and I'll add to the list.

Theocrats, religious extremists, and mac fanboys

Wouldn't we put theocrats in the same category as Theists? Extremists aren't people who are a part of normal society so I didn't include them.
Mac owners...well, Im typing this from a macbook so I can't really say anything. I like both machines for different functions.

All of those things are potential powder kegs, and all it takes is a spark. Furthermore, all it takes is one extremist from any one of those groups to be extremely dangerous.

That's why it's impossible to compare anti-vaxxers to homophobes, which is what you'd have to do to rank them. Are we talking about the millions of homophobes in Russia or Uganda that kill homosexuals indiscriminately without fear of punishment versus measles, or are we talking about the thousands of homophobes in Canada that might beat up a gay guy for hitting on them versus smallpox?

Yes, nothing more fun than a conversation which includes religious extremists, homophobia, racism and smallpox.  All my favorite funny, funny subjects.

Theists are the most dangerous.  And the most dangerous of those are the ones in organized religion.  Organized religion has been the bane of humankind.

Theist is too broad a category.  That's why I was more specific.

It was a joke (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ArsonMurderAndJaywalking).  Horrible thing, horrible thing, mildly bad thing.

Most of these are subsets of ignorance.  When I tried to think of "other ideas", IGNORANCE was the one that kept popping up, but I'm not sure if ignorance belongs on a list of subsets of ignorance, probably not.  It would be a redundancy.

Liberals and Conservatives may not belong on the list.  They are more like meaningless generalizations similar to IGNORANCE.  You might be able to tie some of the subsets to Liberal or Conservative (or Independent) generally, but the subsets don't necessarily fall into one or the other.

Its like Sarah Palin. If her dad had pulled her aside as a young girl and explained that cute isn't the same as intelligent, the world might be a different place today. She makes every blonde woman on the planet look like freakin' Einstein by comparison.  :biggrin:

My order would be;

Theists. Not all, but the whole organized religion can turn it's weaker minded followers into lunatics who bomb people. Then many more become completely deluded souls in terms of science which holds back humanity.

Anti-Vaxxers. Simply put, they are killing people. 9000 people have died in the last 10 years form preventable diseases since this anti vax movement began. I hop Jenny McCarthy burns.

Racists: Irrational, and prone to violence.

Homophobes: Just a degree lower than racists.

Flat Earthers: This is just plain stupidity, but I don't know how harmful they are really!

It's not really the idea of the big spooky that is the most ignorant.  It's people who go right along with the people who will tell us that anyone who doesn't believe in their special big spooky has to be killed off to prevent their big spooky from taking over.
If I were to become a politician and stand there telling people that anyone who doesn't believe in my special big spooky must be eliminated and killed in the most painful way possible it would be the people who go along with it and rationalize murder and mayhem to stop the other big spooky who would be the most ignorant. Or the people who buy into the idea that some corrupt real estate magnate who inherited a fortune and went on to create an image of being the smartest guy who will make America great again because he will build a wall and make the people who it's intended to keep out pay for it... Now that's a whole new level of ignorance and the surface hasn't even been scratched. It's like actually believing that the future can be restored back to the past.. You want to see ignorance in action?  Just remember the guy that Obama beat in 2012..Restoring the future of the past that never existed.. Your mind has been officially blown and you don't even know that it happened..

I generally try to avoid being pedantic, but this one unsettled me.  Oddly, it's just a recently made up word, for a thing that probably doesn't exist, and for which I probably couldn't find evidence to support the true spelling, anyway.  But I think that's Pastafarians.

Actually, scientists, especially amateur biologists (http://www.the-scientist.com/?articles.view/articleNo/34444/title/Regulating-Amateurs/), may be the most dangerous people on the planet.

Out of that list, the flat-earth nutters are the most stupid. Why? Because it's so easy to prove them wrong! How many photographs of earth, the moon, and other planets do they have to see before they start to realize that these are not flat objects?? Yet they just don't get it. They must think that all the planets and stars in the universe just happen to be facing us so that we never see them edge-on. If they were to read the Discworld books, they'd think they took place on a real planet.

Not very, but there's potential.  They have a pretty antagonistic stance towards NASA, they believe space photos are fake, and tend to spread the idea that space exploration is one giant boondoggle.  That kind of rhetoric becoming popular could hamper space projects and associated scientific research.

I would add the home-schoolers. Not only is it further eroding the an already eroded public school system, it's creating a generation of badly educated, badly socialized children

Public education at state expense, is part of the Communist Manifesto.  Therefore it is Satanic ... bwahahah

While I wouldn't recommend homeschooling at all, kids who are homeschooled tend to perform better in college. In my case and my brother's, this was true. The badly socialized part is definitely true, though. The only people a homeschooler socializes with are the people their parents allow them to see, including family, children of their friends, and church members. There is little to no exposure to normal peers, which is the main reason parents choose to homeschool in the first place; to limit "ungodly" influences. I was incredibly awkward in my early college years. I'm still socially awkward, but it was much worse when I was initially released into the real world.

I think that that is the main objection to it - the isolation from the World. I think that it was a mistake to have allowed private schools, but that is a separate issue; the private schools allowed the rich to underfund the public schools and turn them into segregated swamps that would guarantee that the poor stayed poor, but, again, that's a separate issue. Home schooling is allowing parents to abuse their children in the name of God - usually in the name of God b/c, as I understand, homeschooling is almost always done by the very religious who want to isolate their children from secular influences, especially from ideas such as evolution and sex education.
