I've been a member for more than 5 years now. It's about time I get an avatar, but choosing/making one is so hard! I have ideas, but I have no idea how to make them a reality as nobody ever used the words "artistic talent" in a conversation about me unless that sentence also included the words "total lack of". The only idea I have right now is animated. While very simplistic, it is still well beyond my skills. Hell, even one simplistic frame is beyond my skills unless I nab pictures from elsewhere, rip them apart and rework them. I can modify other people's work (by "modify" I mean "remove parts and combine with parts from OTHER other people's work without adding ANY original content of my own) and I can do CAD type stuff (I'm very good with the types of drawings a robot would do. You know, draw a line from point 1,3 to point 17,14, create a perfect circle centered at point 112,217 with a radius of 14, etc.
So, given that I'm essentially a robot when it comes to drawing, and that I don't want to arbitrarily rip off the works of other random people on the Internet without their consent and mash them together to make something that "looks like", but really isn't "mine", any suggestions? I suppose I could just rip off one of the smileys from here. It's not like you guys wouldn't at least know where it came from. Is there a grumpy one? I am getting old.
Why can't you just use an avatar from the web?
Just a suggestion...
^ Also, it's a trivial matter to resize/crop a suitable avatar-sized pic from any digital picture.
Why not take a picture of a nice, zen beach? It's just that it seems to me like you're stressing out about this more than need be.
And it's not like you have to keep the avatar you start with. Just go with what you want, trying and mucking about until you find what's right for you, if ever?
I could use an avatar from the web, yes, but I feel bad about using someone else's work, especially if they may not approve of it used as an avatar on an atheist forum. But more than that, I'm fussy. I want it to "mean something". I suppose I'll just think harder about it and eventually come up with something. When I finally pick one it will be either the lamest or most profound avatar ever!
take a photo of yourself, but have an anime or kawaii face over the mouth and eyes.

It's not hard, yer over thinking it.
I have a question. I'm going in to the city tomorrow... Should I wear my black denim jacket? or my blue hoodie?

Depends. Ghetto or uptown?

Hoodie.
Thank you. I'm glad I asked the forum about such a pressing issue.

Just crop a picture of Pope Francis. He will appreciate your irony ;-)
I chose Spinoza because he was the first secular Jewish person. And a freethinker. Though my favorite rabbi is Rebbe Nachman of Breslov. I play both sides against the middle.
It's hard to decide what avatar to choose, I myself have been wondering whether to just put a photograph of me as mine, but I don't know whether I could handle all that female attention;)
Nobody needs an avatar. Like nobody needs a tattoo or gauged ears or piercings. You just want to stand out in a crowd, like this guy:

Do you feel special now?
I hear Sigourney Weaver left a perfectly good one laying under a tree somewhere.

I beg to differ.
Get a symbol avatar. Bitches love symbols.
I use a photo of myself because in some places being atheist carries a stigma and putting my face out there, while not a big deal, appeals to me. I completely understand why people don't want to post photos of themselves online but I like it when people do. Some avatars are pretty entertaining though.
My avatar reflects the "inner me". A physical picture of the "inner me" would be yucky except to med students. My external appearance has always been something I am indifferent to. No Narcissus.

So the inner you is a dead Jewish guy? Carry on.
The mere fact that, at this point, the OP still doesn't have an avatar suggests a level of indecision and fear of commitment. So how are things in mama's basement?

Lol. Good one.
Ouch. A couple of you were a little brutal there. I hardly think I'm guilty of an offense worthy of derision and mocking for asking a little advice and not immediately choosing an avatar.
To me an avatar says something about me. If it doesn't, why would I bother having one? If it's just some picture I rip off the net what makes it any better than the default image? I don't have any "fear" of choosing an avatar. I just don't want to choose something meaningless to me. In fact, only once before have I ever had an avatar anywhere, which I made myself after a lot of thought, but didn't really like. I usually don't care. But I wanted one for here and I wanted it to matter because this place means something to me.
To those who tried to help, thank you. To those who took the opportunity to make fun of and deride me, including staff, thank you as well. I no longer need an avatar. Problem solved.

We were having fun. You took it too seriously. Hell, we got some here that change their avatar as often as they change status on facebook. Nobody is deriding you. Buck up mate, it's all in fun, like we never have any of that here eh?
