I'll reserve final judgement until I read the article. I think it's possible to talk about the cultural significance of a Christian icon without bias, but I also think it's not easy to do.

Careful.  People thought Old Man Walmart had to go ... but his children were much much worse!

Yes, it is possible to view Marianism culturally, historically, psychologically, sociologically ... but then those aren't "real" science.  This is one of the few goddess worship holdovers left in Western culture ... and the origin of romantic love among 11th century French aristocrats in Aquitaine.  Particularly toward Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Most fossile media are putting out holiday specific material these days.  Since Scientific American puts out its specials in September, it must be Jewish, since the Jewish new year falls at that time ;-)
