Wonder if the pork industry had anything to do with it, or if was just anti-muslim concerns.
I'm not sure how important pork is to the Dane diet. It might play a bigger part there than in other countries, like the US. And perhaps catering to Muslims, which may not be a bad idea as a gesture of appreciation, fucks over the Danish pork industry. I would have liked to have seen more information in the article. I filled in the gaps with assumptions of my own, which is always risky. On the other hand, I suspect some Danes resent being ordered by Muslims to change their society to meet fruitcake religious needs.
There is the other side of the coin going on in Britain.
Britain has very supposedly strong animal rights laws. Stipulating how animals are kept and slaughtered. However due to the intervention of religious groups kosher and Islamic methods of killing are allowed.
Companies now abuse these privileges and use them to circumvent the laws about animal welfare we have.
Thus for instance the majority of chickens eaten in Britain are slaughtered not to the high standards set out in the laws British people have set out for themselves, but in the primitive ways of these backward religions. Thus the very act of tolerance that might seem reasonable, undermines the rules we want for ourselves.
Unless this sort of abuse ends it is hard for me to see that any other approach than that of Denmark has taken over food issues can work.

We had a discussion on this some months ago, and when I did research, I realized Halal slaughter is more humane than most of what gets done in the U.S. Kosher slaughter is debatable, but we are horrible shits to animals in the states.

Several years ago on this forum, there was a poster (long since banned) who posted videos of Halal slaughter of camels. Whether it was actually Halal, as he implied, I don't know, but it was brutal, and to me personally, it was frightening to watch the camels suffer as they did. Having read Upton Sinclair many years ago, I have no defense for the US meat processing industry at all, but I can't justify the brutal and sadistic practice of Halal slaughter either. Take the comparison to the US out of the debate and it is still unnecessarily thoughtless and brutal treatment of animals commanded by an idiotic religion originally created by a perverted madman, which somehow makes it seem even sicker and more perverted; A holy commandment to make animals suffer.
If British Corporations are anything like American, I can see them jumping at an opportunity to circumvent cruelty laws as they may be written in British law. Whether this article plays to that motive, or what the current laws in Britain are regarding slaughter, I can't say.
Halal and kosher slaughter, if done correctly is designed to be more humane ... but also to drain the blood. No blood sausage for Semites! But American slaughter cared not for either concern, it only cares about efficiency ... so as to minimize cost. If they could save money by walking cows thru a nuclear reactor area ... they would ... and the resulting radioactivity would be your problem not theirs. It has already been proposed to do neutron bombardment of prepared meat ... to deal with the filth and germs that do get to the butcher's section of the store ... including salmonella on the chicken meat. If they did this, then Ukraine would finally have a way to put the decommissioned Chernobyl to use ;-(

Don't get me wrong: I'm a vegetarian largely because of the commercial meat industry. Yet I imagine there are a lot of people out there just looking for any reason to hate Islam or Judaism and their treatment of animals is a convenient way to act indignant over a religion that they hate when they really don't give a shit about animal treatment as they scarf down wings on $1 nite at Hooters.
Halal allows for the animal to be stunned before it is slaughtered, but kosher laws do not. Since the influx of Muslims into Europe has exploded in recent decades, these new laws seem more targeted to Muslims than they do Jews, which I find ironic. These laws will inadvertently affect Jews whose slaughter practices are actually worse than Muslim ones, but why is it no one seemed to care when it was just Jews?
I'm not defending either slaughter practice and I certainly can't defend the commercial meat industry as a whole, yet I can't help feeling a lot of the outrage stems from people who are just slaves to fashion and already looking for a reason to hate Muslims.
So while I think it's repugnant that there are religions that mandate animals should suffer needlessly so that these animals are "clean" to eat, what does it say about secular society that we aren't even bound by such rules and do worse things?
heheheehAAAAaaaaaa.....eat pork and DIE, Little Mohammad!

Pork is one Denmark's largest industries. Granted, a lot of it is exported, but it is still important.
