Title: Reddit's Getting New Rules, Reminds Me of What AF Went Through
Post by: SvZurich on July 15, 2015, 03:18:51 PM

Once upon a time, AF was the rough and tumble offshoot of the old IG board.  It was split off when Reggie went on "Wife Swap" to generate publicity for the site.

We ran this place with as light a hand as possible, but rules were begged for.  And rules came.  Now Reddit is going through the same growing up.

Hey Kimmie...

I heard there was a revolt in reddit. Because somebody was fired? So it is getting better?

If you read the article, you'll see that soon, things will be getting much, much worse.  :D  Depending on your point of view.  The ones who complained and got Ellen out of Reddit are about to be burned.  :D

I don't even read it. I don't know anything about it. I have just came across people discussing about it. It sounded interesting though. I don't know why.

People hate Ellen out of ignorance. They want her fired because people were fired at Reddit and hate forums were shut down. She was its CEO. She recently lost a lawsuit where she sued her for employer alleging sex discrimination. It is now revealed that Ellen was the biggest ally that the people who hated her ever had, protecting their right to free speech.

Ok not to pick nits but no one has any right to free speech (nor did they ever) when it comes to privately owned entities. Lots of privately held entities grant users/patrons free and open speech which is nice but they're under no obligation to do so.

Now on to the more important question at hand. What is reddit, how does one typically make use of it and why should I care? I ask this because I know that reddit exists and I've even stubbled upon it from time to time via google search results. But having seen what I have of it via search results, I don't quite understand what exactly it is nor why anyone would want to spend idle time there other than via some search result. I guess I'm an old fart but I'm not getting what the hook is with it. So what's the hook?

Also follow up question. Someone that once owned this forum went on wife swap to try to promote the forum? Did it work? Seems like kind of an odd business plan.

Heya Kimmy.. I've never really been able to figure reddit out though I have tried hundreds of times.  I'm not to big on the hatred I've seen on it when I did use it.
Don't be such a stranger toots!

APA!  *hugs*  Life gets busy.  It's summer break from university, so I have some more time, but also more obligations around the home.

Ultimately I think it did more harm than good.  Reggie took a chance.  Then it led to death threats, having to move, and more issues.  He sought publicity to bring his site to the attention of more people, and it brought attention to bigots too.

That's according to Yishan, and Yishan isn't exactly the most trustworthy source on Pao's exact motives. The only thing we really know for sure is that a lot of what got blamed on her was actually the doing of admins like kn0thing.

It doesn't really help that Reddit has no PR department to keep the staff from spouting off stupid shit they really need to keep to themselves.

I can't claim to know the goings on of Reddit lately, but the story on the grapevine was that Ellen Pao fired an AMA mod out of the blue, sparking a backlash, with lots of subreddits going private in retaliation.  Then Pao got sacked as a result of the ensuing shitstorm.  Never heard anything about hate subreddits until now.  Or about Ellen Pao being a good guy.  Maybe she pulled a Fenthick and took a bum wrap.  Or maybe not.  Wouldn't exactly be a first for either revelation.

Either way, voat's looking pretty nice right now.  Storms come and go, the small fish get big, the big fish become filets, and I just keep on paddling.

The big issue a lot of people were having wasn't that hate subs were getting banned. /r/FatPeopleHate had it coming. The problem is that Reddit's rules are enforced only selectively. /r/shitredditsays frequently and flagrantly breaks many of the same rules as FPH, not the least of them being vote-brigading, and has never received so much as a slap on the wrist. Many subs parodying FPH but not actually associated with or engaging in the same activities as it were also banned for no reason.

I'm sure some assholes were actually mad about FPH itself being banned, but most of us are just upset about Reddit's hypocrisy with regard to its own housekeeping.
