A mob of young men armed with clubs raided an Ebola clinic in Monrovia, stealing bedsheets and claiming that the virus is a government hoax is get money. Nurses and at least 17 of the clinic's 29 patients fled the quarantined area which had been set up in a high school.
This is what a culture of fear does to people. A similar thing occurred in West Africa during a polio vaccine campaign. A rumor that the vaccine was a government conspiracy to sterilize people stopped compliance dead in its tracks, and the virus eradication program fell.
Reminds me of fluoride in drinking water when I was growing up.
there is some validity to the suggestion that the eradication of stupidity is as simple as leaving them to their own devices.

We have tens of thousands of people right here in the USA who are pretty sure the government and Big Pharma are evil entities that only serve to experiment on us for a profit.
Is it bad that I feel like physically harming some of these people? Like whenever I see sometime who is an antivaxxer or pro-homeopathy/"alternative" medicine I just want to punch them in the face and/or wherever pair of genitalia they happen to possess. I mean these people at least have an excuse from lack of education, but when you live in the first world and think that homeopathy is a viable alternative to modern medicine you are a fucking moron. Of course I restrain myself, but fucking hell humans are idiotic at times.
I feel the same, Skeletal. It's really frustrating. I think it's just more fun to believe conspiracy theories than it is to educate oneself.
The comments on Facebook about this event are some pretty square evidence that Americans are just as fear-oriented and ignorant as the people of Liberia.
Doesn't matter how far we come as a species, humans are still animals, and still react like animals to bad situations.
The anti-vaccine movement in the U.S. is the first thing that came to mind when I read this. It's almost understandable when you get a bunch of illiterate and uneducated people still mired in superstition as they are in Liberia. What on earth are idiots like Jenny McCarthy thinking?
