QuoteA Nigerian man has been sent to a mental institute in Kano state after he declared that he did not believe in God, according to a humanist charity.
Mubarak Bala, 29, is said to have been forcibly medicated by his Muslim relatives, despite being given a clean bill of health by a doctor.
The International Humanist and Ethical Union say a Lagos-based group has asked a lawyer to take up his case.
Kano is a mainly Muslim state and adopted Sharia (Islamic law) in 2000.
The IHEU says that when Mr Bala told relatives he did not believe in God, they asked a doctor if he was mentally ill.
Despite being told that he was not unwell, Mr Bala's family then went to a second doctor, who declared that his atheism was a side-effect of suffering a personality change, the group says.
Mr Bala, a chemical engineering graduate, was forcibly committed to a mental institution, but was able to contact activists using a smuggled phone.
IHEU spokesman Bob Churchill said the group was concerned about his "deteriorating condition" and called for his "swift release".

This is exactly why the animals are not allowed to run the zoo! Any zoo!
racism is allowed here?
in a atheist forum?

I'm not sure that his statement was necessarily racist, he could have just been referring to the religious nut bags as "animals". Just because they happen to be of another color than he (presumably) does not mean that his comment was directly related to race.
And, naturally, we'll hear the same kind of outcry in defense of this man's religious freedom as we heard about the christian in Sudan, right? Right?
whats racist? Aren't we all gawds creatures?

He is talking about the religious nuts. And he is right.
he is emphasis the word ''zoo''.
and the topic is about ''a nigerian man''

Such a good topic to get so derailed so fast.

Fox news is getting right on that in 3...2.................................
Under Islamic law apostasy is punishable by death. :hang:
This guy got off easy.
How many gays in the past were treated for mental illness by the psychiatrists in this country? How many children are treated for mental illness now because of normal behavior that is being used as a disciplinary action by school psychologists and psychiatrist? How many are treated for mental illness because they go against the so called norms of society---like wanting to go to war and fight for so-called freedom, or patriotism? :fU: :butt: Solitary
And therein lies the 'slippery slope'. I've seen quite a few here and elsewhere declare religion to be a mental illness as well,

It's more of one than atheism. Atheism is based in actuality, theism is based in fantasy.

You must have an awfully low opinion of black people or at least Nigerians to infer what you did from that statement in that context. Maybe you should check yourself for racism first before you let it slip out again in public.

Which one involves hearing voices in an empty room?
Well ya know.. Pointing fingers often gets them pointed back. Neither is a mental illness. Most people have problems with their mortality... even most atheists.

It's you drawing the connection there. Nobody else.
To me, I thought it was akin to "lunatics running the asylum", and I can see why hrdlr110 avoided that turn of phrase.

Actually, it's about someone who is an atheist and being treated as if they have some sort of disease. The fact they are a Nigerian black man is irrelevant.

We are all animals, so get over it. :pidu: :pai: Solitary
Such a great way to get the pious to stop being pious, tell them they're all mentally sick in the head.. Crazy fuckers! Nothing says please don't be so crazy like calling them crazy. This street goes both ways which is clearly demonstrated in the OP.

When they first wrote the DSM there was serious pressure to exempt "being religious" from "delusional behaviours". And this started before they even considered that section.
