Title: Far Right Victory in France

QuoteThe same earthquake was felt right across France in Sunday’s elections. For the first time in French history a party of the far right, Marine le Pen’s FN, topped the poll in a nationwide election, with 25 per cent of the vote. Ms Le Pen will send 24 MEPs to Strasbourg â€" she will also go herself â€" an eight-fold gain on the last parliament.

President Hollande’s Socialists registered scarcely 14 per cent, their worst score in a nationwide election since the party was founded in the 1970s. The “main” opposition party, the UMP â€" heir to the Gaullists â€" scored only 20 per cent. This was a disastrous result for a party which expects to produce the next President of the Republic in 2017 (and probably will).

Several political health warnings need to be attached to the result. The turnout was only 43 per cent, compared to 70 per cent or more in national elections. Only one in four of those people who voted for Marine le Pen said that they thought that the FN’s policies â€" protectionism, scrapping the euro, halting immigration â€" would rescue the French way of life. Only one in five FN voters said that they opposed the EU.

...

Both left and right have offended by demanding sacrifice while indulging in selfish, or in some cases corrupt, behaviour.  Most voters recognise that Marine le Pen offers no solution. She does offer a chance to express inchoate rage against politicians, against Europe, against immigrants, against the markets. She asks for no sacrifices. She offers scapegoats.

Brachay, like many similar villages, votes FN not because it is directly threatened by crime or by immigrants, but because it is scared by the world that it sees on the television. Equally, the wider French vote for the FN is an ostrich vote for the past; a vote against the present and a vote against an uncertain future.

Against this background, the similarities between the FN “victory” in France and the Ukip “victory” in Britain are striking â€" but misleading. In both cases, the party in power was pushed into third place. In both cases, the far right/populist vote was fuelled by a mixture of anti-Europeanism, anti-immigrationism and anti-“elitism”...

Aw, French learning they are pretty much the same as other nations?  But don't worry, fascism and racism don't exist in Europe.

Soundd like a vote to resurrect the likes of Hitler I guess. From what I've seen on Umerkan TV the fascists have just about taken over the crowds at football matches, but it could be typical umerkan TV trying to make American football sound downright civilized.

QuoteThomas Jefferson had "potatoes served in the French manner" at a White House dinner in 1802.[6][7]

The expression "French Fried Potatoes" first occurs in print in English in the 1856 work Cookery for Maids of All Work by E Warren:

"French Fried Potatoes. â€" Cut new potatoes in thin slices, put them in boiling fat, and a little salt; fry both sides of a light golden brown colour; drain."[8]

In the early 20th century, the term "French fried" was being used in the sense of "deep-fried", for other foods such as onion rings or chicken.[9][10]

It is unlikely that "French fried" refers to frenching in the sense of julienning, which is not attested until after French fried potatoes. Previously, Frenching referred only to trimming meat off the shanks of chops.[11]

Wikipedia knows all. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_fries)

I love mayonnaise, but hate Ketchup. I love American hamburger though. Did I pass or fail?

And why the hell you people call fried potatoes, French fries? It was first done in Belgium. Belgian fries?

God-fearing Americans call them freedom fries, lest we give credit to the cheese-eating surrender monkeys.  The rest of us call them fries and I'd wager most American kids would have to think hard to identify the term "French fry" with what they know all too well as fries.

Based on the information in the report, it appears that there is no consensus on anything. I suspect the hard right gets traction because of fear in part of the incursion of Islam in Europe.

We should change the name to Turkish fried in your honor shoe. Turkey fries just doesn't really sound right though. Nothing personal.

I heard you people fry a whole turkey though. I'd like to take a bite, is it good?

It is good. I prefer smoked, myself. The act of deep frying a turkey is also known as "setting fire to your garage."

Especially when you take a frozen turkey and toss it in boiling oil. And another reason why the Europeans think we are stupid.   :winkle: Solitary

Properly cooked (thaw your goddamn turkey and don't overcook it, fucking morons), fried turkey can be delicious. Of course the seasoning makes all the difference. You can buy store bought, but it's better to get a turkey syringe and make your own mixture.
