MONTREAL - Montreal police say they've made an arrest in a case involving alleged threats made for nearly 20 years against atheists and secular scientists around the world.

In a curt news release, they say they've arrested a suspect but have few other details.

Police started investigating the online activity of a Montreal man following a deluge of complaints from around the world about his alleged habit of threatening people online.

More than 3,000 people signed a petition calling on police to investigate reports of death threats against atheists and secularists.

Some people allegedly being threatened said the Montrealer, who goes by the online moniker "David Mabus" among a number pseudonyms, has been at it for nearly two decades.

Most of you know about the threatening emails that Canadian Dennis Markuze, aka “Dave Mabus” sent to many atheists and scientists. I myself received hundreds of them, including death threats. When I asked others how to report them, I learned that Markuze had already been reported to the Montreal police, who apparently weren’t interested in messing with him so long as he sat in his mother’s basement and didn’t actually hurt anyone.

That, of course, has changed. Carl Zimmer, P. Z. Myers, and others made serious complaints, there was a petition signed to the police, and, finally, the police themselves lured Markuze into attacking their own Twitter account. Ars Technica has the whole gory tale of his capture and arrest.

And, as far as anyone could tell, the complaints went nowhere. The local authorities weren’t interested in acting, and most of Mabus’ targets didn’t even live in Canada. That eventually changed, in part due to Mabus’ lack of discretion when it came to choosing his targets. One of Zimmer’s tweets apparently caught the attention of William Raillant-Clark, who handles press for the University of Montreal. Calling the inaction “unacceptable,” Ralliant-Clark began investigating the story and placed his results on Tumblr; he also included the Montreal Police’s press account on Twitter in some of the conversation.

Here’s where Mabus’ thoroughness backfired. Noticing the Twitter conversation between Ralliant-Clark and his former victims, he added the journalist to his target list. And, since the Montreal police’s Twitter account was also mentioned, it got a copy too. Mabus actually started sending diatribes to the local police force.

He’s a sick man, and I hope he gets the help he needs. But really, the Montreal Police should have taken action long before this. How many death threats does it take before someone gets investigated? Or do they have to wait until those threats are actually carried out?

He has actually waited outside atheists group meetings and made threats. Solitary

The internet is serious business.
And some people still wonder why non-believers "hide" behind anonimity.

God should flood the earth again and punish this guy. That'll learn him.

It's been on the net for a while now, at least the parts of his post I read. Mabus was in lust with RDF.

I wonder if this guy is just an urban myth because I've never seen him and have read about him on several sites.

He was here quite often, but the mods were good at deleting his posts and accounts nearly as quickly as they were posted. I believe they also set up a thing to replace his name with "fuckward" or something like that.

Dennis Markuze has been a constant annoyance for quite some time now. Here you can read something more about him and also have a look at his mug (http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Dennis_Markuze).

As you can see in the link above, a tribunal has forbidden him to take part in online activities; still, he goes on posting his crap on atheist boards, as he did today. No doubt there will be consequences for his transgressions.

On a Facebook group I am, we have a similar situation going on, with a "celebrity" like this.
This guy, that is the admin of a lot of different groups like The Question Evolution Project, United Seekers For Truth, Atheism on the Slide, etc.

Always nice to see Christians spreading Christianity by being a role model.
Wait a minute ...

I remember the name Mabus from somewhere.  I think it was here.  I wonder why the police were so reluctant to arrest him, and why the courts just keep letting him go.  It seems strange.

The face is familiar, but I just don't recall any of his posts. Maybe I should pay more attention to the crackpots.

I can't remember anything he wrote specifically.  Maybe he was one of those guys who seemed too disconnected from reality to pay more attention to; Like one of those guys that you have no idea what they're talking about, or what purpose it serves.

His posts were rather schizophrenic. If you could remember them I'd suggest to seek professional help immediately.

Yeah, there is no way you could remember them unless you had an extremely impressive memory. They had no rhythm or theme what soever.

And here I was thinking I'd missed out on something exciting.
Well that's a relief.

I believe he was at another forum I was at and he had threaten people at the forum and also some famous scientists. I believe someone posted it at the forum, or I looked his name up on the internet after and found that he had been arrested after he threaten a police station not knowing it was. He! He! I can't believe is still doing it, because it is a felony in the United States. Solitary
Talk about a repeat offender!  Whether the courts just continue to give him a good talkin' to and let him go, or whether they lock him up for good, I don't see any change in his future.  I guess someone in the system is sure he's not a danger to society.  I hope they are right.  But his behavior does seem compulsive to me.  The red flags are certainly there.

He still frequents many atheist sites, including this one and the other one.
