Title: Exorcism
Post by: sophonian on May 21, 2014, 10:08:31 AM
I have read about exorcisms and I find that many cases of exorcisms appear to be cases of schizophrenia.

But there is one thing that i do not find explanation. In the case of Anneliese Michel, she could talk in a lot of languages (latin, aramaic...). And she broke glasses of the window with the mind , put down crosses and all that stuff. Their parents said that and In the video recordings she talks in other languages and makes reference to all that stuff. I know that there are exorcisms in other cultures, but this sound as the most strange case.

That's two languages, hardly a lot, given that I know a deaf girl that can speak 5 languages fluently. I can break glass with my mind as well - a simple head-butt. So, BS I say.

QuoteAnneliese Michel (21 September 1952 â€" 1 July 1976) was a German woman who underwent Catholic exorcism rites in 1975 and died the next year, due to lack of medical care. Later investigation determined that she was malnourished and dehydrated; her parents and the priests responsible were charged with negligent homicide. The case attracted media and public attention because of the Catholic Church's unusual decision to employ the 400-year-old ritual of exorcism, something that had been rarely seen since the 18th Century. The film The Exorcism of Emily Rose is loosely based on her story.

When Michel was sixteen, she experienced an epileptic seizure and was diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy. She was determined to be depressed and was treated at a psychiatric hospital. By the time she was twenty, she had become intolerant of various religious objects, and began to hear voices. Her condition worsened, despite medication, and she became suicidal. Michel and her family became convinced she was possessed by demons, and appealed to a Catholic priest for an exorcism. While rejected at first, after much hesitation, two priests got permission from the local bishop in 1975, and performed exorcism rites on her for 10 months, in secret (as ordered by the bishop). After her death, Michel's parents and the two priests were found guilty of negligent homicide, and were sentenced to six months in jail (reduced to three years of probation), and a fine. The case has been cited as an example of a misidentified mental illness, negligence, abuse and religious hysteria.

As to the voices and so forth, unless there is reliable third party-non religious professionals such as medical doctors or psychiatrists- I would discount it. also, the parents were both negligent and prone to religious hysteria, based on what I read here. I would not take anything they say as proof, and without specific scientific evidence, not believable.

I was accused of demonic possession in Jr High school when the movie was popular because it didn't scare me in the least. Of course the school and my parents laughed it off and so did I.
I grew up with a lot of people from the hills who believed in that shit and some even thought the movie was a documentary.

Yup, I think that pretty much explains the dynamics of the situation.

I assume you mean that they were languages she had never learned or been exposed to enough to learn them on her own. Who was there to verify that she really was speaking these languages and not just gibberish? I doubt that any of the priests involved were multilingual.

From what I have read on this case, it seems that Anneliese approved of all the treatments she was undergoing. She had been raised to be very religious and had this bizarre idea that she needed to suffer for the wayward youth of the world. What started as epilepsy became full-blown schizophrenia. She would growl at religious icons, claimed to hear voices, spent two days crouched under a table barking like a dog, and eventually stopped eating in the belief that it lessened the hold that the evil spirits had on her. I can't help but feel sad for this poor girl who started out so bright and ended in such horrific circumstances. Had she been given the help she so desperately needed, she might have been able to lead a somewhat normal life (although that is difficult for a schizophrenic). Unfortunately, she was raised among religious nutters who saw the devil in everything.
