QuoteMeridian police show up to free book giveaway
Junior Mountain View High school student Brady Kissel showed up at Kleiner park in Meridian to pass out copies of "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian," by Sherman Alexie -- a book that's received national attention thanks to some local parents complaining about the novel.
Some parents believe the book is not appropriate for 10th graders. Others who showed up said they had no problem with their teenager reading it.
The book was taken off the Meridian School District's reading list and is under reveiw. It is still on the shelves in school libraries.
Some Meridian parents objected to the sexual content in the book. Others say the book is anti-Christian. Some readers say they've seen worse.
"I didn't find it offensive at all , in fact there's a lot more raunchy stuff that kids look up online," said Mindy Hackler, a junior. "This is really nothing. "
"There's a paragraph right here where it has some sexual content," Kissel said. "But if you look at it it's a paragraph this big in a 230 page book." That page reads 'If God hadn't wanted us to masturbate, then God wouldn't have given us thumbs."
After about an hour of Kissel passing out books to teenagers, Meridian police showed up. They said they had been called out by someone concerned about teenagers picking up a copy of the book without having a parent's permission.
Police asked Kissel about passing out the book. They said they found nothing wrong with what was going on in the park.
Kissel says that they had 350 books to giveaway at the park. She says the publisher gave another 350 books. They are planning on having another book giveaway next week.
The best way to get kids to read is telling them that they aren't allowed to. Calling the cops on them will want them to read it even more. Congrats Meridian.

I don't see what the fuss is about. Pretty tame for a young adult book. IIRC, at the time, I was reading Heart of Darkness, Lord of the Flies, The City of Gold and Lead, The Witches, and 1984. And I turned out just fine!
It's no Scrody McBoogerballs

Dafuq? By 10th grade I can assure you they are seeing FAR worse on T.V., internet and in other books. They are still immature in some regards, but by 10th grade I think they can fucking handle sexual content or whatever the fuck they are bitching about.
Does anyone know of an atheist organization calling for the Bible or Koran to be banned from school or public libraries? If there are books that are hateful to other people then it's those pieces of shit, yet you never hear of an atheist group calling for banning them.
For that matter do you ever see a gay rights organization calling for them to be banned? These are books that directly call for the death of homosexuals but once again I've never heard of a gay rights group call for a ban.
Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, but the only people I see calling for books to be banned are religious idiots. At the same time these people tell us that we're anti free speech when we call someone out for saying some really bigoted shit. Sure, they occasionally lose their jobs, but that is not us forcing them out but rather the very same free market forces they love so fucking much forcing them out. When they say bigoted shit they turn into a liability for the company, so they get pushed out; I have never seen any major organizations call for them to be jailed. They actually want to ban books, yet we're the ones who hate free speech. It's fucking doublethink at its finest.

I've seen groups that wanted equal access for atheist literature which was then fear-mongered into them wanting to ban the bible.

Hey, let's wast the cops' time! Picking up books without parents permission? Have they never heard of a library, for fuck's sake?
Once again, MORMON! Meridian Idaho is home to a strong Mormon presence and a Mormon temple. Love to see them getting their faces rubbed in this shit. Exposing their youth to the reality of bullying and gayness? The horror!
Farcical scenes. This book had similar issues, it has been pushed by dawkins here in the UK and features an atheist revolutionary politician... at a book signing some religious extremists turned up to protest. I'd recommend reading the first chapter in the least, there's a speech on atheism in it that is genius (link here - http://thechroniclesofhope.com/preview/)
And yet the Christians think the bible is OK with its insanity and horrible examples of cruelty and sadistic examples of intolerance, prejudices, bigotries, hatefulness, and perversion of normal "SEX" with their Puritan ideals. :axe: Solitary

I managed to get
Stranger in a Strange Land assigned in 1966. Probably my proudest moment in high school, after banging one of my teachers anyway.

SmOff Admit it, you were 28 years old when this happened. He! He! Solitary
I'm always amused by parents who believe that their children are these innocent little creatures, pure as the new-fallen snow, who have never said a swear word or seen a picture of a naked person. Long before 10th grade, most kids have discovered their dad's/older brother's porn stash.
I actually got my love of reading as a kid skimming my dads library books for the juicy parts where it would describe often secks, peepees, girl parts and all that till I began following the whole story. It was a weird, kind of backward, way of appreciating reading, but it's what interested me, graphic descriptions of sex acts in like spy novels and the other stuff my dad read. He was the managing editor of a newspaper do no shortage of newspapers either. He would bring home 8-10 library books a week and speed read them all and back then, well at about 12 there was a lot of steamy stuff in there and you see what a fucking deviant monster I turned out to be reading that filth!
come to think about it I still enjoy the juicy parts.

City Of Gold And Lead. One of my all time favorites that I read as a kid.
you want to talk about funny books people overlooked for whatever reason.

Not that I'm complaining, I own the book, and looove the front cover and the artist, also that its right up there on amazon uncensored.
*Please be aware the book cover is a very homoerotic image if your easily offended*

When I was in Junior High the school was reading us a book (I for get the name, I want to read it again as an adult) about how these parents tortured their child to death, rape, molestation, etc., this was in the 1990s in a Conservative Christian town on the outskirts of Orlando, FL. Oh, the incident happened in Orlando and was by a local writer.
Talk about a book that could actually be viewed as inappropriate.
