Title: To militant or not to militant?
Post by: Alexnvy on April 24, 2014, 06:35:38 PM
I am always criticized for being a militant atheist, few people said that I give us a bad name. In my opinion if you do NOTHING then you get NOTHING, yes shuar  science and progress is slowly making people see reason but at a slow pace, and dose nothing to the uneducated loud moths who disrespect us, I don't think we can sit idly by, and I'm not saying we should be those loudmouth jerks yelling at theists and criticizing them we should be more sly asking questions and just kind of getting people to answer them being insidious so to speak. Even if it won't  convert people to atheism at least it will raise awareness because right now people don't respect atheism at all (search "anything but an atheist ") "Atheism the last minor that it is ok to make fun of, on tv or in person, I have witnessed it myself,

"you don't believe in god then you can't celebrate Xmas" person yells at me at a buss stop after a pleasant conversation, (and I celibate New Years bitch XD) and I could have avoided it by pretending to be Christian and if I were any other religion she would have been curious, and you wouldn't ask a gay guy to comment on a chicks butt just to fit in,  why should I pretend I believe in god!

So what do you think should I stay militant and be open with what I believe in, or should I just stay quiet about what I think, being a closet atheist so to speak ?

Please comment and discuss I always appreciate input and I always take it into consideration to improve myself!

I was confused by the bit where you used "to" instead of "too".

"To militant or not to militant? That is the question!"

Here's where you are going to run into discrepancies. People understand different things when you say "do something". Also, there are different ways as to HOW you do something.
What do you understand by saying you're militant?

What would you guys mean by do somthing, for me to do something would be to find a good set of questions some Bible verses that are controversial and go around talking to people and asking them questions and just letting them figure it out for themselves for the best teacher is not a teacher that tells you what to think but a teacher that tells you where to look, also joining secular communities around here everybody meeting up talking about things letting each other educate each other stuff like that I am in San Francisco Bay Area's Meetup group that's pretty fun I learned a lot since I've gone the three meetings that I've been to but yeah

To pee, or not to pee? THAT is the question.

Can I pick something that is somewhere in the middle of those two? I hate absolutes. Only the Sith deals in absolutes.

I was asking if there could be an option that was a blend of both militant and not militant. I hate categories. Their too restricting... sort of like pants.

Meh, the Sith aren't as bad as the Jedi make them out to be. History was written by the victors.

Wat ????? I love to bitch on line too and I'm rude online but in person I try to insidiously get under the lid so to speak ask questions to make them think, by the way I need more questions, I haven't had that much theist contact sence I finished high school so I forgot all of my "path stayers" but that is how I made my gang of non religious potheads with whom I hung out for most of my high school days :p b

Define militant, like burning down churches or making religion illegal?  Or  starting a secular charity to help Americas homeless? Both would help atheism, in a way

When I hear the term "militant atheist," I can't help visualizing some dudes flying planes into buildings while screaming, "WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW!?"

Ain't that the sad truth. For the most part I'm still pretty much a closet atheist. And I'm fine with it. People know me as a "staunch skeptic" in real life, but not an outright atheist. I do the dance because I value relationships and a steady income more than just opening up on everybody how I think religion is fucking bullshit.
