Post by: EntirelyOfThisWorld on December 01, 2013, 09:22:43 AM

Dogs Barking Jingle bells.

Foot note; Gene Autry is reputed to have hated Frosty the Snow Man

Ironically, for this old atheist curmudgeion, the least anoying are alot of the old christian carols, and the Irving Berlin stuff.

God, I hate that one.  Not a big Springsteen fan to start with, and this is neck and neck for his worst song with I'm Going Down. (500,000 "down's" in 3 minutes, Boss, really?)

QuoteDogs Barking Jingle bells.

Love this one.  As a kid I got back as those nasty, brutish adults for the many and varied indignities they visited upon the youth.  In a restaurant my parents gave me a quarter to play a Christmas song.  When I put in the quarter, lo and behold a miracle from God.  Just as the fish and four loaves fed the multitude, so the quarter fed a multitude of 100 song credits.  Barking Jingle Bells Dogs were due for 100 playings that day before the restaurant owners finally found a way to shut off the machine.

Some other really annoying ones:

So this is Christmas:  More condescending, preachy lyrics from the narcissist who's more popular than Jesus.
Little Drummer Boy:  Especially the version by gravel-gargling Bob Seger.
Jingle Bell Rock:  Nuff said.

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire

I hate it with a burning passion

I also don't really like the Mariah Carrey song anymore, overplayed to the point of annoyance

I can't believe nobody has brought up
The Christmas Shoes

For those of you unfamiliar, here are the lyrics.

This was also, OF COURSE, made into a Hallmark movie. I am dead serious.
QuoteIt was almost Christmas time, there I stood in another line
Trying to buy that last gift or two, not really in the Christmas mood
Standing right in front of me was a little boy waiting anxiously
Pacing 'round like little boys do
And in his hands he held a pair of shoes

His clothes were worn and old, he was dirty from head to toe
And when it came his time to pay
I couldn't believe what I heard him say

Chorus:
Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, Daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight

He counted pennies for what seemed like years
Then the cashier said, "Son, there's not enough here"
He searched his pockets frantically
Then he turned and he looked at me
He said Mama made Christmas good at our house
Though most years she just did without
Tell me Sir, what am I going to do,
Somehow I've got to buy her these Christmas shoes

So I laid the money down, I just had to help him out
I'll never forget the look on his face when he said
Mama's gonna look so great

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, Daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight

Bridge:
I knew I'd caught a glimpse of heaven's love
As he thanked me and ran out
I knew that God had sent that little boy
To remind me just what Christmas is all about

Repeat Chorus

All of it.  Sappy, superficial, dull, awkward - there's a reason why it's not played the rest of the year.

Not familiar with it, but I am picturing music by some sappy '70 pop schtik band like Captain an Tenile, or Tony Orlando, or any more recent Country act.

EDIT: Bobby Gentry was the name I was searching for, or Jim Croce with a lobotomy

As far as The Little Drummer Boy, hate to say it, but it's one of my faves.  Think about it.  Heres this kid saying "O.K, it's christmas and I gotta get you something, just don't expect me to spend a lot"

Doh.  I knew it was one of those lame tunes.

Another one is Twelve Days of Xmas.  That song has one redeeming feature in that it has roots, like the practice of celebrating Xmas in December, in Paganism.

I couldn't get past the pear tree thing, a seasonal fruit that's basically bare and dormant in December.. Oh goody, eh? :)
Not to mention they're really tall trees so the partridge would nest way up high so starvation looms..  To bad the second day wasn't a gun with two bullets.

Quote from: "wolf39us"+1 Springsteen: Santa Clause is Coming to Town

I hate "Silver Bells" and "Grandma Got Runover By a Reindeer"

Although I agree with all those voting for Springsteen: Santa Clause is Coming to Town, I LOVE Silver Bells, Bing Crosby version.
Also, little Michael Jackson is still just killing me with Santa Clause is Coming to Town.  I just hate AL versions of that song

Quote from: "aileron"Some other really annoying ones:

+100 to So this is Christmas.  I hate it.
Not a fan of Jingle Bell Rock either.

Also agree with  the person that said most country and rock versions suck.  There are a few exceptions though.  For instance, as goofy as it is I love the original "Santa Baby", Which I guess is more blues/soul, but still, a good one.  Also like most Irving Berlin, Berl Ives kiddies songs, Crosby and Cole (even the religious ones, they are pretty, if you disregard the lyrics...).  Cole's "Oh Holy Night" is really moving, even if it is fiction.  Mostly, I like "Classic" Christmas songs, and oldies waaaaay more than anything made since about 1980.

Not really a fan of any of them really they are too sweet or jolly. :-&

Actually I tell a lie, I can tolerate the original "Do they Know it's Christmas", dunno why.

This one I saw on an Anita Sarkeesian vid (#1 on her list) is wrong for another reason altogether:

Exactly.  Anyone who expects me to believe that a drummer, playing a fucking drum solo, is a gift fit for the Creator of All That Is -- that person clearly has never known a fucking drummer.

Also, I've got a  couple of favorites: "Santa Claus is Coming to Town", for specifically documenting the misdeeds of a domineering and voyeuristic burglar, and this one, for its sublime beauty:

Quote from: "BarkAtTheMoon"
Quote from: Eddie IzzardWhen you landed on the moon, that was the point when God should have come up and said hello. Because if you invent some creatures and you put them on the blue one and they make it to the grey one, then you fucking turn up and say, 'Well done.' It's just a polite thing to do.

Or if god is a little less than omnipotent, he could bury a big black slab on the gray one and mark it with a big magnetic field so they can find it and dig it up.  When they dig it up and sunlight hits it for the first time in eons, it sends god a signal that they made it.

Back on topic.  I have always liked Classical Music, from Bach to Stravinsky.  I can handle Handel's Messiah, and Carol of the Bells cause of the Baroque vibe goin' on.  Mostly the stuff that started coming out in the commercial age is crap.  The Irving Berlin Stuff is OK only because it is better written than most.  In high school band we always had a Christmas concert where I usually felt like throwing up afterward.  The only redeeming thing in all that was Sleigh Ride (the instrumental version), which was actually fun to play because of the polyphonic orchestration.

I hate almost all Christmas music. It's either too cloyingly sweet, or really stupid and annoying, or it's all Jesusy. Actually, I can tolerate the old-timey Christian songs better than I can the modern shit. I just got a job at Fry's market, and they play country music ALL THE GODDAMNED TIME. They are mixing it up with Christmas songs, and sometimes they play country Christmas songs, because Christmas music by itself isn't sucky enough without a Texas twang. Luckily, I can't hear the music too much in the deli area.

I do have a few favorites:
