"Yesterday morning, I said goodbye to them; they said they were going in search of a dream to turn this dream into a reality for us. Today, the dream ended.”

Quotehe club was seen as a Cinderella story just two years after breaking into Brazilian soccer’s first division. It defeated Argentine powerhouse San Lorenzo last week to make it into the two-game championship round. On Sunday, it lost to Sao Paulo team Palmeiras in a game that decided the Brazilian championship for the winners.

The team’s ascent from the depths of Brazilian soccer was the talk of the South American football world.

QuoteBrazil and the entire soccer world were in mourning Tuesday after a chartered plane carrying a first-division Brazilian soccer team to a historic game slammed into a Colombian hillside, killing 71 of the 81 people aboard, authorities said.

Officials downgraded the death toll from an earlier reported number of 75, according to ABC News, NBC News and other news organizations. The 72 passengers included members of Chapecoense, a Brazilian soccer team that rose from relative obscurity to play in one of South America's most prestigious tournaments. The team had been scheduled to play in the Copa Sudamerica finals against Atletico Nacional on Wednesday in Medellin.

Twenty of the dead were journalists, and only one journalist survived, the Associated Press reported.

Colombia is calling for the South American federation to automatically grant Chaeconese the title. Here is to hoping there is a shred of humanity left in fifa and it's granted.

I saw on CNN that some official had prayed that god would keep them safe.  I guess god was occupied elsewhere or just did not like the team.  We all know how closely he follows soccer.

The official meant well, but prayed to the wrong god.

The Romans had a deity for every occasion ... in this case Ipsumus.  As is typical, Icarus is unable to save frequent fliers.

I often laugh when people credit a deity for saving them but never blame that deity for not saving them.

As odd as it may seem, I have sometimes hoped to be involved in a tragic accident and survive, just so I could say to the reporters, "No deity was involved in my survival"!

That official should have used the time he was praying and checked the fuel tanks.

Yes, faith based travel ... would leave me stranded between here and the big city.  But I don't fly a plane, so no problem.

Those who do not fly on a plane can still have one fall on them.  LOL!  You get the sword reference I hope?
