Are you saying, as an older person, that you want your doctor to run your life? Is Dr Mengele free?

There are coronavirus parties now

This is exterminatus-grade stupidity right here. This is like walking through a minefield intentionally.

1) Even though this virus isn't super duper deadly, you're are still rolling the dice and playing russian roulette with your health.
2) Everyone else you come into contact with are also rolling those dice, unwittingly and unwillingly.
3) Even non-lethal cases can cause some pretty serious long-term bodily harm.
4) Going to the hospital ain't cheap, and wastes medical care and supplies that could save the lives of non-stupid people.

There are like a million logical, ethical, and pragmatic reasons to stay away from the goddamn plague and not a single one for hugging it.

Do not underestimate the stupidity of the American people!!
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent,
Is he able but not willing?
Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able or willing?
Then why call him god?

Around the globe some people are choosing to participate in social gatherings for the express intention of catching COVID-19. They’re being called coronavirus or COVID parties, and the idea behind them is that it is better to get sick with the virus and “get it over with.”...

The same thing happened with HIV even before there was effective treatment. Some people will engage in self-harm behaviors to relieve anxiety, particularly if they feel tired of avoiding something believed to be inevitable.

Another lovely story: bar reopens illegally, armed nutjobs stand guard

Quotethe owner of Big Daddy Zane's in West Odessa, Texas, opened her bar even though Gov. Greg Abbott's reopening plan explicitly mandated that bars remain closed. When officers arrived, they saw six men in body armor and armed rifles standing outside the establishment, according to Griffis.

But it isn't inevitable. In fact, it's so not inevitable (evitable?) that all it takes is a trivial amount of precaution and protective gear to make it all go away. That's basically as far from inevitable as possible.

I know, I know, a lot of people aren't very calm and rational about stuff, especially big threats. That stuff tends to amp up their anxiety and they find release in odd, illogical ways. I mean no offense, but is there a way to make humans less humany? Cause we're going to need to move in that direction if we want to survive as a species. Or to have nice things and nice times. Or to not scare away our first contact.

Sitrep 5/5 SARSâ€'CoVâ€'2
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

USA:

New cases (daily): 24,798 (nearly the same as yesterday)
New deaths (daily): 2,350 (almost double yesterday, dafuq!)
Currently infected: 916,941 (increased)

We seem to be plateauing instead of peaking :/

This is an atheist forum, so everyone here knows that people believe and do all kinds of things that don't appear rational. Humans spend an enormous amount of energy trying to avoid unpleasant thoughts and feelings and they come up with all kinds of strategies, some better than others. One thing that makes the current situation so difficult is there is a high degree of uncertainty. This isn't a situation where we get through the summer and then everything will be normal. It's also a situation where infection can result in illness ranging from asymptomatic to permanent organ damage to death-- it's a roll of the dice. It also doesn't help that people are not responding uniformly to the threat, with leaders, coworkers, and family members all behaving differently. When we are uncertain we look to how other people are behaving and in this case it isn't very helpful, which creates more anxiety.
