The fig tree story is pretty different than stories with fantasy monsters. Fantasy monsters are symbolic and/or intended to inspire awe, fear...etc. But this one has a better telling about where the whole story comes from.

The god is hungry, gets angry because it is not the fig season, and while he cannot think to make the tree give figs to feed himself and his entourage, he wills/curses people not to eat from its figs. He doesn't curse the fig season or the fig tree not to give figs. He curses all the people on earth not to eat its figs because he is angry that the tree has no figs.

The god  does not just turn into a petty homicidal sadist when he gets angry, who condemns the people he created wandering in a desert to death, he is also a moron.

Quote from: drunkenshoe on September 07, 2022, 02:16:35 AMI don't get this.

They're cows. Cow tipping is when you sneak up on them at night and tip them over. Does not work, though, because a) they're nocturnal, and b) they're really fucking heavy.

Oh, I see. Thanks. So there is something called cow tipping. LOL

We 'new atheists' have a reputation for being militant, but make no mistake  we didn't start this war. If you want to place blame put it on the the religious zealots who have been poisoning the minds of the  young for a long long time."

Eh, not exactly what the story is about, at least by the end of that passage.

Quote20 When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. "How did the fig tree wither so quickly?" they asked.

21 Jesus replied, "Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and it will be done. 22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer."

So it's about believing in the power of prayer and faith. He just murdered a tree to prove the point. I always though this one sent a mixed message.
