I've actually used that Open Cities mod. It's pretty cool. Hopefully the next Elder Scrolls is just built that way from the start (and with bigger cities). Starfield seemed to accomplish that just fine.

Maybe instead if Mark and Recall, they could have a couple new spells. You could have an Escape spell that teleports you to the entrance of the dungeon that you used to get there. Helps you get out quickly. Another spell could be called Home, which teleports the player to a player home (or their last bed) of their choice. The catch could be that the spells take a while to cast, you have to stand still and have stable ground (no water or shaking ground), and are interrupted if any damage is taken, so they'd be better used out of combat, or if you manage to create enough distance. I also think they shouldn't work in Daedric realms. If you're in Vaermina's nightmare world, you should have to fight your way out of it. If you can just poof out of it, that feels like cheating.

You've literally described a hearthstone (which is essentially a very watered-down mark/recall that can only be bound to certain dev-specified points on the world map)

My stomach rumbled like a distant thunderstorm and there's a good chance some sort of gut bacteria either went extinct (at least one species is basically the medical equivalent of a shiny pokemon) or ascended to godhood, or both.  Also, my intestines twitched a little throughout the day but that's normal, right?  Right?!

Well, to quote Lopan, from Big Trouble in Little China, "You were not put on this world to 'get it'."
