Since the stereotypical redneck is a poor rural white person, it would appear that you're making a joke out of oppressing poor rural white people. I wonder how this differs from making fun of downtrodden people from other demographics.

There are a lot of poor white people that don't qualify as rednecks, so that by itself is not definitive. I've never considered myself a redneck, and I grew up poor and rural. Hillbillyatheist may think of himself as a redneck, but I don't. Ted Nugent, Hank Williams Jr., Toby Keith, definitely. I think we are talking more about the caricature of what we see in the media rather than an easily defined demographic.

I grew up white, poor and rural and have been referred to as a redneck but don't really consider myself one.  Does HBA fit the stereotype to an outsider? Of course he does, and someone who didn't know him would pigeonhole him as such.  But we know that he's a pretty great guy and isn't even close to conservative.  Is being biased against a caricature of a rural white redneck any better than being biased against the caricature of an inner city black thug?

one thing is for sure. you won't win over poor whites by shittng on them.

you have to cut through the cultural wars crap, and make the economic policies clear.
for instance I bet you 100 dollars if it was put to a vote in oklahoma, the reddest of the red states, that minimum wage would increase, that medicare for all would be supported, taxes on the rich, etc.
all you'd have to do is make it a straight vote, not tied to any party, maybe get a few guys on TV like Toby Keith endorsing it, and you'ld win overwhelmingly.

most of the folks I know vote against obama because they're ignorant racists, scared of his muslim sounding name and/or because of things like guns and abortion and gays and evolution.

not because they support the evil economic policies of the right.

we must try to get as many people into the leftist tent as possible if we want to form a coalition against the 1%. this means active outreach and programs and education campaigns. its been done. there was a socialist movement in oklahoma and kansas at one time.

I agree we need to deal with immigration reform, but you do know that there's legal spanish speaking americans too, right? LOL in fact some of them were born in the US or in states annexed by the US, for instance new mexico which was annexed by the united states. you also have legal immigrants such as cuban refugees in florida. I'm not saying we should all learn spanish, but maybe we shouldn't hate people that do. As the Christians would say, we're all gods children, red, yellow, black, and white, we are all precious in his sight. its true, I'm not christian, but I do love the sentiment behind that saying. lets all love each other.  :-D

Furthermore, you could convince the new residents to secede from the union and let Mexico handle them once it annexes the territory after a complete yet brief independence. The irony of the USA putting up a fence on the other side of Texas would be damn near poetic.

I haven't met Willie yet, but his daughter is a regular in the grocery store where I part-time on occasion ... she gets deer-corn.  Really nice lady, and friendly.  I've asked her to pass along my regards to Willie and she says she has, and that's as close as I've gotten to him. Well, that, and I've seen his big tour bus up and down the highway a couple of times.

I should add, he doesn't live here year-round.  He's usually only here in the spring and fall, when the weather is mild.

Listen, defending any stereotype is shitty. I got sick and tired of Californians assuming that because I'm a Texan, racial slurs are acceptable speech.  But what really made me laugh about it was how it showed that the stereotype of enlightened coast-dweller was just as full of shit as redneck ... they're just as bigoted, they're just better at hiding it.

Your post did point out racism and bigotry, just not in the way you intended.

So why not go all out and forget the reservations.  You should suggest reeducation camps for everyone who disagrees with you.  Lesson one will be "resistance is futile", and lesson two will be "even though you all say you are different you will admit you are all the same."  There will be strict punishments for those who resist lesson two.

These camps will have armed guards to prevent the inmates, er, patients from trying to escape, er, leave before their treatment is over.  Punishments must be harsh because, as you know, "those kind" only respect force.  Stress positions, water-boarding, forfeiture of luxuries such as food and water, etc.

That would finally end the two menaces of libertarianism and conservatism.  Oops, I said they were two and not one, that means you wish to sentence me to your concentration, er, reeducation camp.

A. That was a joke.
B. I was born a Di Dio, so no I am not white. And several of my ancestors, less than a 100 years ago, were still being debated if they were even full human... let alone if they were white or not.

I don't get insulted when people assume I am white because they have no reason to think other wise. But after telling people I am not white and they insist on it anyways (not accusing you of this, just kinda ranting about it) really pisses me off; "real" whites sold some of my ancestors into slavery and bred them like cattle.

By Americas garbage census, I would be considered Latino/Hispanic-White. But the majority of my ancestors are from the Mediterranean and are culturally closer related to Latin (Shit, the Italian is the home of Roman Catholicism, a HUGE part of Latin culture) and Arab culture than "White" culture. But then, Arabs are technically white in America so... if you really want to use the American Census (which Anthropologists pretty well agree is garbage) than yes I am "White".

Though to be fair, I am about a 1/5th English, so I am definitely PART white.

I'm sorry Thum, I like you but I just don't see how you can compare Southern Conservative Whites who vote for politicians who want to strip women of the right to their body, deport immigrants simply because "ZOMG DEY GUN TAKE UR JOBZ!" and install theocracy to black music being played on the radio.

Edit: Also, I cant stand the concept of white/black/asian/w.e... it literally tells you shit all about a person's culture and is a complete joke that was used to justifying keeping group B beneath Group A.
