Once Texas puts the entire family of an executed person in a concentration camp, then perhaps.

A report that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had his former mistress, a well-known singer in the country, publicly executed made headlines around the world recently — but observers say the account should be taken with a grain of salt.

The report was published by one of South Korea's most read newspapers, The Chosun Ilbo, which cited unnamed "sources in China." A newspaper that has no cameras or video recorders.

It said that singer Hyon Song-wol was arrested on Aug. 17 for breaching the country's laws on pornography. Hyon was reportedly executed in public, by a firing squad using machine guns, on Aug. 20 along with around 11 other members of the state-run Unhasu Orchestra and the Wangjaesan Light Music Band.

The victims "were accused of videotaping themselves having sex and selling the videos," according to the report, and some "allegedly had Bibles in their possession, and all were treated as political dissidents."
But to what extent the salacious and gruesome details are to be believed remains an open question.

While there were numerous public reports Tuesday about the high-profile arrival of former NBA player Dennis Rodman in Pyongyang, accurate information about executions, like much else of what transpires in North Korea, is difficult to come by. And details about the personal lives of the country's rulers are guarded particularly closely. And there were pictures of Rodman.

The Hermit Kingdom, as North Korea is sometimes known, ranked second-last on Reporters Without Borders' most recent press freedom survey, two spots behind Syria and just ahead of Eritrea. Television, radio, telephone networks and the internet are controlled by the government in such a way as to minimize contact between the East Asian country's 24 million people and the rest of the world. And yet this story got out some how, as did the one on Rodman. I'll believe it when I see actual pictures or videos. Solitary
There is nothing more frightful than ignorance in action.

They were.... (and lost back then).

The Skeletal Atheist

False or not, the main reason this article seemed credible to some at all is because North Korea has been known to conduct public executions.

Well they aren't above murdering a man with a mental age of 5.  And they rounded up all those japanese during WWII.  It can't be too long now.

In South Korea, when someone watches North Korean TV, I would think a common response would be to kill himself.

For one, our state government allows us to carry guns and will usually defend our right to self-defense. Judging from the video SkeletalAtheist posted, I'm quite doubtful the North Koreans get to carry weapons or even have the option of self-defense.

Yes, Texas' standards may be barbaric when compared to other states in the union or with first-world nations, but it is literally a paradise compared to North Korea. Executions are often done with the sincere belief of upholding some sense of morality and the firm belief that there is no other way. These executions are few and far between. Furthermore, when someone innocent is executed, it is due to genuinely erroneous belief - not with a deliberate purpose to instill fear, conformity, and maintaining of a tyrannical dictator. When someone is erroneously placed on death row, we have the moral imperative to rush immediately to free that person from their sentence and offer some sort of compensation -- another feature not found in that video from North Korea.

I do not much care for Texas either, but I have sense enough to realize it's not an evil place to be. It's just mostly run by idiots with good intentions (usually). The North Korean government knows very well it is exploiting its people and it has no problem using death and fear to maintain its tight hold.

My condolences to the victims who died and my sincere condolences to the people in Korea who live with the very real idea that it could be any one of them tied to a post and shot. It truly is the dystopic world of 1984 over there.

I guess Oregon, California, Washington and Utah must be hailing Obama is the god-king now and hanging people in the streets who disagree with him then using that logic...

Texas had more German/Italian internment camps than Japanese, which makes sense given the fact we are a very Germanic state.

(Note: I realize you are joking [I hope], but don't pretend other states have a nice history. Texas is pretty normal in terms of that. It feels like the people who wave signs of Bush/Obama with the Hitler stash... it's funny but stupid.)

I don't.  There's plenty of history to go around.

Texas isn't normal even for the American definition of normal.
