Unbeliever

I guess I must have seen it decades ago, but I don't remember any of it. I'm about a third through it so far, and I'm hoping it'll get better.

Couldn't find the clip from Beware the Blob, but it's about 35 minutes in:

I gave up on Triffids for now, in favor of Damnation Alley. I saw this one decades ago, but it's another one I barely remember at all.

Quote from: Unbeliever on December 08, 2023, 09:05:41 PMNow I'm watching The Day of the Triffids, which I thought had Leonard Nimoy in it. Just more Mandela effect, I guess. 😎
Turns out that was Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
Nimoy was in "THEM!" but didn't get a credit line. He was a GI working in the center where they screened reports for giant ant reports.

I like telling nurses and aides about the triffids, the rolly thing that holds the IV bags has five "feet" like the aliens.

Yeah, I saw that Nimoy was in Them when I looked at his IMDB list of movies. Another one I'm hoping to see again soon.

I see that this movie has Madagascar hissing cockroachs! Too bad they're not the least bit dangerous. 🪳

I buy the boxed set, "50 Nightmare Worlds!" and the like. 50 really bad movies for the price of one ticket to a theater with solid gold popcorn.

Went to see Godzilla: Minus One. It's really good. Pacing is a little all over the place sometimes, but the movie does a very good job making you care about its human characters. Godzilla in this movie is pretty freaky. Shin Godzilla looked uglier and scarier, but this Godzilla is fucking psychotic. In most movies, when Godzilla kills someone, it's not out of malice, but because it either feels threatened or simply didn't notice you. This Godzilla sees you, and it wants you dead. It's extremely aggressive. Because this movie takes place just after World War II, the country is still recovering after being nuked, its weapons decommissioned, and it's up to the private citizens to come up with their own solution. What they come up with is pretty smart. The movie kept me guessing, and I didn't see that ending coming. And never have I wanted Godzilla to die so much.

My only major gripe is that Godzilla's motivation seems unclear. When it kills people, it doesn't eat them. It just crushes them, flings them, or blows them up. So it isn't motivated by food. All we're told is that it is expanding its territory, so I guess that's why it's destroying everything? It sees humans as competition for resources? I'm not sure what those resources could be though, since deep sea fish are the only things it apparently eats.

[SPOILERS BELOW]

They changed up Godzilla a bit. Its beam attack, instead of a steady stream of energy, fires at a spot in the distance, and it's like an atomic bomb going off, blowing away anything in the vicinity. When it charges this attack, it's hurts itself. This doesn't seem to bother it much, though, because it heals ridiculously fast. The thing is like Cell from Dragon Ball. You have to completely destroy it or it will come back.

The movie has some sequel bait at the end. I'm not sure how to feel about that. This movie was a good standalone film, and I'm not sure how it will go if they expand on the story. If they bring in a second monster for Godzilla to fight, would Godzilla then become the good guy? That would feel kinda forced, unless they can pull a Terminator 2 on us somehow.

I hope they keep this up. The children's Godzilla & Co. wasn't much to begin with and then went down hill.

In other news, Red Kong is coming!

I've always found the idea of King Kong being on the same level as Godzilla to be completely ridiculous. Godzilla's powerset varies depending on the interpretation, but one thing he always has? Fucking nuclear laser breath. How does a giant gorilla shrug that off? lol
