Title: Political Compass Thread Format
Post by: aitm on June 02, 2018, 09:50:40 PM
I mentioned in the "conservative/athiest" thread when someone posted the Political Compass site that we are probably a lot closer than the options given. I would like for us to consider examining this.

How do we do that? We can start with the first question and instead of 4 answers give a rating of 0-10, or 0-100 which may subject us into a vagueness that is useless.

So I propose that we start with a singular thread and start with the first question and limit the response to that to x days and then tab the results and go on to question 2.

I kind of think this could be fun if we understand the premise is to simply state our position, NOT argue about it,,allow some afterthought based on the opinions but to formally FORBID arguing about each position. We each get a chance to state our opinion, list our "answer" and move to the next one, but also allow us the chance to change our position or scale based on others positions.

Does this sound like something anyone would be interested in doing? If not then certainly I am not going to spend time on it. I also welcome anyone who finds this more interesting than I do to take the lead on it if you want to. I find the topic interesting but I fear the time involved may make my responses to tabulation slower than some may like.

Ideas? Suggestions? Interest in the whole f-ing idea?

Edit: based on this : https://www.politicalcompass.org/test

Sure, I'm up for it.  I suspect we'll average out to just a bit south of center, but I don't care to make a guess east or west.

And for Page 1 Question 1 (assuming we're all seeing the same one: "If economic globalisation is inevitable, it should primarily serve humanity rather than the interests of trans-national corporations") then mark me down for Strongly Agree.  Or 9/10.  However you want to sort it out.  :)

An excellent idea, for the formal debate section (ironically without debates).

We could so something similar for Xero's proposal, just one item ...

A list a beers, you get one vote.  You also get a like scale of 1-10 or 1-100 ... and your total on the like scale for all beers liked can't add up to more than 10 or 100.

Well, let me reiterate that opinionated as I am, I have no idea how the metrics of this would be parlayed into the graph. Perhaps someone has knowledge of this and can tabulate after there is some discussion. I get the idea that several of you could easily do this and perhaps it would be interesting to have two peeps who are polar opposites each do one to see if any bias, may exist as well.

Let's hash this out and come up with a plan before we actually begin.

Statistics.  Hakurei Reimu is expert.

There are averages and standard deviations, easily tabulated and calculated in Excel.  A rating of 1-10 for example, in the political climate pole, or 0-9 or 0-10.  Maybe that is too much.

More simply make a ration of all yeah to total possible weighted votes.  Say if 100 voted and the rating was 1-10 ... with 10 being the strongest favor ... then it would be X/1000 with X just being the sum of the weighted votes.

Sounds interesting, yet daunting.  Creating good tests for this sort of thing is not easy, and requires a larger sampling than the number of forum members who are currently active.  We might want to throw out some questions and add others.  Results are often skewed and render invalid conclusions because of poor questions.

A few years back I created a self-ownership-survey (http://pragmatarianism.blogspot.com/2012/01/self-ownership-survey-sos.html) (SOS) that included 10 arguments/issues...

1. Abortion should be illegal (A/D)
2. Consensual slavery should be legal (A/D)
3. Polygamy should be legal (A/D)
4. Business owners should be allowed to discriminate (A/D)
5. Drugs should be legal (A/D)
6. There should be a licence to procreate (A/D)
7. Children of any age should be allowed to vote (children's suffrage) (A/D)
8. Campaign contributions should not be restricted (A/D)
9. Taxpayers should be allowed to directly allocate their taxes (pragmatarianism) (A/D)
10. Taxes should be abolished (anarcho-capitalism) (A/D)

A participant would combine their answers (Agree/Disagree), stick SOS in front and that would be the unique identification for their political party.  For example, here's my political party's unique ID...
SOSDAAAAAAAAD.  If everybody in the world took this survey... how many different political parties would there be?  How many people would be in your party?

Anyways, just wanted to throw this out there as a less time-consuming alternative.

To the surprise of many, as a non-authoritarian ...
SOSDDDDDDDDDD ... since on #4 & #5 there is no middle position ...
Having just watched a video biography of King Frederick the Great of Prussia, I must post a strong "nein".  Enlightened monarchy is best.

Self ownership requires self discipline and a conscience oriented to the common good, along with humility and mercy.

Willie, Nickie and Georgie weren't nearly enlightened enough, and the world is still paying the price for that.

Well I simply don't know how the graph works. I can easily understand Y/N 1-10 Left to right, but after that I am graph dummy.

It's a very black and white designation.  Where's the room for nuance?

Let's take "Drugs should be legal " as an example.    Is that all drugs?  Medical drugs?  Does it cover prescriptions?  Does it cover alcohol?   What about butane?

Socialist, liberal, conservative, libertarian and anarchist are all very broad labels.  The point of my survey was to create more specific labels.  But from your perspective, the labels wouldn't be specific enough.  I think you're overlooking/underappreciating the reality of the commonly used labels.

9 of 10 too.  Does that help?

Well, if this is a question about the graph, is there some change you would like to make?  Or is this a proposal to design a different graph.
