Well, you have to see "Attack of the Crab Monsters" to understand. The cast spends most of the movie trying to figure out what/whom is/are attacking them. Turns out it was giant telepathic crabs all along.

Saint Patrick is said to have driven all the snakes out of Ireland (in reality, they weren't able to spread to Ireland and survive, they aren't in Ireland's fossil record) + Medusa is said to have a head full of snakes instead of hair = Saint Patrick inadvertently banishing Medusa's snakes.

My joke played on the same theme - all the members of House Slytherin (snake mascot) have disappeared.
