I'm sweating in NC, and not just because of the heat.  That red swath is menacing.

Idaho has been pretty high, their 7-day moving average for cases/day has been in the high 400s to low 500s for about a month, which doesn't sound that much but they have less than 2 million people in that state.  So that's a high case/pop ratio.

Well, there's a whole new level of meaning for 'red state'... considering seven of the eight worst affected are reliably Republican and the eighth is reddish-purple.

Our COVID-19 daily update numbers for Thursday showed that we had 169 new cases, but Rodriguez said only 57 out of the 169 came from local testing conducted on August 13. The rest of the positive tests were sent down from state contact tracing teams.

Texas county:  no confidence in covid numbers

Collin County health officials say they have "no confidence" in the state's COVID-19 cases following a dump of backlogged positive coronavirus cases across the state due to coding issues and a system upgrade.

Collin County has been relying on daily updates on their COVID-19 data dashboard from the Department of State Health Services.

The dashboard says this as of Tuesday: "Warning: Collin County is providing COVID-19 numbers and data as a convenience to our residents. However, because we have been made aware of inaccuracies in the Department of State Health Services’ reporting, we must advise residents that Collin County has no confidence in the data currently being provided to us."

US daily cases: 50,455 (a significant decrease compared to last week's 60,000, part of an overall decline - every week it declines in a stepwise fashion)
Currently infected: 2,490,109 (record high, but growth has slowed and nearly stopped)
US daily deaths: 1,170 (still high, we'll shortly officially hit that dreaded 180,000 - though based on excess deaths, we hit 200,000 a while ago)

National testing: 697,695 (daily testing has slumped - but not as fast as daily cases.  Testing is 84% of its peak at the end of July, while case numbers are 70% over the same period.  So the recent decline in testing alone can't explain the recent decline in cases)  Source

NC daily cases: 2,008 (Worryingly high 2-day spike, almost twice the previous days, very strange) Source
Testing: as you can see from the above link, testing has actually been declining, and yet we have a very recent uptick in cases.  Not a good combination.  At least hospitalizations are down.

SC: 1,058 (new cases have declined dramatically, around half of what it was just a month ago) Source
Testing: testing appears to have declined a lot, but cases have declined much faster.  Source
And the % positive tests have declined from somewhat, a couple weeks ago it was predictably cresting at ~20% and bottoming out at ~15% - well now that's more like ~18% to ~13% or lower.  Source  Hospitalizations are down, too.
Overall, it looks like SC has significantly improved.

Testing: significant decline in testing at roughly the same time and magnitude that cases declined.  Very suspicious.
Deaths are still fairly high.  But % positive rates have plateaued at 9% (just barely in the yellow zone, the red zone is 10% or higher) and the rate of transmission recently dropped below 1 (the virus is spreading to less people than it has in the past, the pool of infected people is shrinking) Source

Florida: 4,684 (Unbelievably low, it was nearly 3 times this amount just a month ago) Source
Testing: both testing and cases have declined tremendously (From July 19th to August 20th, testing is just ~42% of what it was, while cases are 36% of what they were).  Something is very wrong with this picture. Source
I dunno what to make of that, but there might be real good news in Florida's % positive tests - they've declined significantly, very recently dipping below 6% Source
Yet when I check John Hopkins, they're at 14.5% which is a VERY different story.
Something really fishy is going on here.

Looks to have improved so much that it's no longer a major battleground state, so I'm going to stop tracking it for the time being.

I honestly am having a hell of a hard time interpreting that testing chart, but it appears that testing is less than half what it was at the start of the month a little less than half.  Strange.  Very strange.  Source
I went to John Hopkins for a second opinion (I might use them on the regular in the future) their % positive is currently 15.9%, an increase from where it was from the start of the month.
Cases are down and fewer active cases but % positive is up?  Very suspicious.  Is the situation improving or not?  I couldn't tell you.

John Hopkins still gives it a somewhat high % positive of 8.6%, but it that has steadily been decreasing.
The situation has improved so much that I'm no longer going to track this state as well.  Kudos.
