Title: Used to like it, now can't stand it
Post by: aitm on April 10, 2015, 07:47:45 AM
Could be anything, but Ima start with music. Used to love "American Pie" now can't stand it. Use to really like Stevie Wonder, now he grates on me, somewhat liked Jackson, now not so much. Used to enjoy AC/DC now it sounds like Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan singing Simon and Garfunkel....can't take em anymore. And it Pizza disappeared tomorrow (sorry Pick) I wouldn't miss it a bit.

Styx.  I was in high school in the 70's.  Styx Pieces of Eight tour was my first rock concert. At the time, I thought it was the greatest thing to happen to mankind.  Now I hate Styx.

Pickled pigs feet--now, just typing this made my skin crawl.
My grandfather was straight from Sweden, and he had a small farm.  While he had a little livestock, nothing went to waste.  I remember him eating pickled pigs feet and joined him.  Loved it.  Now it's gag city just thinking about it.

Hey, interesting post, aitm.  I'm with you and pizza.  I used ot like it, now I get queasy anytime someone around me mentions we should get some.

BTW, I'd like to point out this only counts for fast food pizza (Domino's, Pizza Hut, etc.).  I really enjoy pizzas made by real pizzarias, with good, fresh toppings that don't include canned olives and mushrooms (gag).

Oh, that's one, used ot love canned olves as a kid.  I could eat tons of them.  Now I am very grossed out by their metallic taste.

I used to like pickled herring, now I can't figure out HOW I even used to like that stuff, lol.

When they came out with these news video's instead of the written word I was all for it, it didn't take long for me to hate it. I can read it 10 times faster and be on to something else before they get done with the f-ing commercial....

Pickled herring--that brings back memories.  My grandfather would eat a jar of those things as a snack.  I thought they were nasty as a kid--horrid to think of now.  But then he was from the old country and put sugar on his lettuce.  Put a sugar cube in his mouth to drink his coffee.  Loved blood sausage and pault.  Didn't like much of what he ate, but I sure loved that guy!

Use to love spring and pickled onions. Now can't stand any kind of onion.

In contrast, I use to hate all forms of seafood, but now love it, even oysters

Used to eat sardines with my granddad.  He would put mustard on them and we would eat them with crackers.  Now I can't imagine eating those things.  All those crunchy little bones.  Nastay!

Television and commercials

something happened in the last couple years, I don't know what, but I can't stand television or commercials. Commercials that are supposed to be funny come off as extremely stupid, un-funny, and transparent. And television is a load of shit too. If there is a show I want to watch, I'll watch it on demand or on my computer so I don't have to deal with the rest of the shows or commercials.

My grandfather used to by pickled herring in huge jars.   I would guess somewhere in the neighborhood of 6 to 10 pounds per jar.  He would put it on hard tack, which I can seldom find anymore, although there is a product called something like Wassa light that comes close.  I liked pickled herring as a kid and still do, but it has to be packed in wine sauce.  I think it has a special name, which I never really learned.  I can tell it's what I like by looking at it.  There's some other types of pickled herring that really turn me off, however.

My grandfather was from Sweden, and I think it was part of his heritage.  He proudly called himself a "herring choker".  He also had a beer delivery guy, sort of beer milkman.  The beer man had keys to our basement, and would wheel in 4 or 5 cases of beer, and take out the empties.  I'm not sure that has anything to do with herring, but while it seemed normal to have a beer guy with keys to your basement back then, I think it was probably a cultural thing like the herring.  I remember the name of the beer he drank.  It was called Yusay Pilson.  I've never seen it since I was a kid.

SGOS--hardtack--love that stuff!  My grandmother used to make it and it was wonderful!  Real butter on hardtack!  Food of the gods!  My grandparents lived on a small farm north of Portland, Oregon and so could get quite a bit of the Swedish foods back in the day.  Seems there was a large number of immigrants from Sweden, Denmark and Norway there; especially Swedes.  Until about 25 yrs ago I could get Swedish hardtack from a Swedish store in Portland.  Now I can get a good version of it from Raleys here in town.  It comes in a round package and is a very good hardtack.  I remember my great uncle listening to Swedish language radio and then, treat of treats, Polka and Shaddish music.  Anyway, hardtack memories are good memories.

Yeah it came in huge rounds like a small pizza.  I found some like that a few years ago.  It may have been in Petersburg, Alaska, which is a Norwegian community.

Pork chops are another thing on the list. I used to love them on the grill. They sort of make me gag now.

I think it has something to do with hormones, my tastes in food have changed drastically over the last 5 or so years.

Queen.  Loved 'em in the late 70s.  At best indifferent to them now.  Can't think of the last time I listened to 'A Night at the Opera' -- but it was some time around when I was in college, so early 80s -- and I'm not even sure I still have my old copy anymore.

I read some psychological studies on the effectiveness of commercials.  It seems that enjoyable commercials are not as effective as annoying ones.  The annoying ones make a bigger imprint on your mind.  Somehow this translates into better sales.  It doesn't seem like it should, but the mind, especially the part effected by emotion, doesn't work in a rational way.

In addition to commercials being annoying, they do that thing where they turn up the volume, which makes it even more annoying.  I find commercials insulting.  The people who make them only care about selling things to you.  They obviously don't have any interest in your comfort.  OK, it's a free country, I guess, but I have chosen to cut the cord.  Like you I've been without TV for maybe 4 years now.  I hate being manipulated like some kind of robot programmed to go shopping.  I have a higher regard for myself than that.

Hardtack brings back childhood memories - with peanut-butter. Gramps ate pickled herring as well, while reading letters from uncle Arne back home. My great-grand-father came over from Sweden, I'm visiting for the first time in August this year.  I'm busy contacting family I've never met so that I can catch up. Really looking forward to it. Uncle Arne from Sweden is looking forward to it too!

As a kid I ate peanut-butter and catsup sandwiches. Don't think I could do that now! Hmmm...... curious, might need to find out tho.

Damn, that is a slew of grandpa's from Sweden.  I really loved and enjoyed mine, so maybe a grandpa from Sweden isn't such a bad idea!  Hardtack and peanut butter.  Never thought of it--don't know why, cause I like them both--hmmmmm, on my way to the kitchen right now! :)

But peanut butter and catsup??????  You can count me out!  Peanut butter and honey--or jelly--or even grape jelly and baloney (yep!)--but no bananas.

I didn't really like mushrooms that much as a kid (the texture kinda put me off), now they're my favorite food ever!

I can tolerate herring more than most, but yeah, they went from mildly attractive to mildly repulsive.

Now sardines are a different story.  They're amazing to me now.  Especially the good kind.

Man, no one is liking my favorite pizza toppings today!

Full disclosure:  I initially didn't like them and only ordered them because my brother hates them.  It preserves the territorial integrity of my portion of the pizza and was only mildly distasteful to me.  Now, I actually do like them but rarely get them because of the huge salt content.  Fortunately, he also can't stand black olives.  :)

I cannot stand either the taste or sight of sardines or anchovies--period.  But I will fully join you on the bandwagon of olives and mushrooms on pizza--or just about anything else.  I am really not as fish person at all--will eat pacific cod, talipia and the like--fish & chips are good--if the chips are more than the fish.

Listen. All you need for your pizza is a guy that knows what he's doing. I've seen too many people screw up what could be a quality regular cheese pizza. And plain cheese pizza is good on it's own. If you need a topping, you get pepperoni. Don't get overly creative with your pizza or you ruin the beauty of simplicity that IS pizza. Pizza isn't just food. Pizza is life.

I used to order mushroom and sausage, because I enjoyed the simplicity and contrast of those ingredients.  But everyone else wanted the combo, so I gave up and started eating the "kitchen sink" pizzas.

Pizza has been taken over by huge corporate conglomerates, and the small pizzerias run by folks who once lived in New York or New Jersey are kind of hard to find, but they do exist.  And I'm convinced that's where the really good pizzas come from.  Of course, just because it's not one of the corporate pizza franchises doesn't mean it's going to be a good pizza, but that's the group from where the great pizza comes from.  Corporate franchises never produce a great pizza.  They are edible, but never great.  Some of them are totally crap, too.   If you live near a good pizza joint, consider yourself lucky.

Pizza lends itself to new creations, and many are really bad ideas.  When you blindly go into a place that says "Pizza" on the front, you never know what you're going to get.

You are clearly demented, perhaps the pizza god has stolen your soul…you need help my friend, perhaps a nice chicken marsala..or a good beef stew, I make a fucking awesome beef stew.

There's a lot of things I used to like. Guns n Roses comes to mind. Use You Illusion is not as good as I remember.

I also used to like women, now they bug me.

I used to love ABBA!  Now........I still love them!

But I do hate pineapple on pizza.  And dessert pizza, too.  Whoever thought pineapple and ham should go together???

Mormons. It was their mission in Hawaii that married Pineapple to pizza. This is true. They also invented fry sauce. The entirety of culinary achievements of Mormonism, in one phrase.

I did serve part of my military duty in Hawaii.  I did enjoy the Polynesian Cultural Center. It was surprising how much influence they have in that state.  But ham/pineapple is simply over the top.  Just another reason to dislike them.

Creed.

I actually went to one of their concerts.  Scott Stapp grabbed an acoustic guitar and I was thrilled that he was going to play it.  Nope.  It stayed slung on his back the rest of the concert.  Very disappointing.  Now, I can't help but think the guy is a massive tool.

That would be because he IS a massive tool.

I use to like Schwarzenegger and his movies, probably because it was before the internet and I didn't have a means to really look into facts about him. Now after knowing the kind of guy he was in his bodybuilding, movie and political career, can't even enjoy terminator or his naked butt shots anymore.

That aside "True Lies" with Jamie Lee Curtis is still a fun movie. Hot damn that woman gave me the chills.

I've never been a great fan of Arnold.  He's OK, but I usually don't go out of my way.  I've only seen the first Terminator movie, until about a month ago, when I bought the series.  However, that was more because of my interest in Linda Hamilton.  Having said that, the series wasn't bad.  I'll probably watch it again in a couple of years.  And yes, I do like True Lies.  That's a fun movie.

Spam!  OMG.  I used to eat that as a kid too. My mom would fry it topped with melting brown sugar and serve it with fried eggs for breakfast. You'd have to pay me to eat that now.

Poor Jamie Lee.  My husband kind of scorns her too because of her androgenous looks and rumours of hermaphiditism (or however you spell that I'm too sick to be bothered to go look it up).  Personally, Ithink she's great, and also love True Lies!

I've never loved Arnold, but there are lots of actors who I think are douchy, but I'm still ableto enjoy movies/shows they make, if it's good. For instance, I know the dude who plays Kramer on Seinfeild said some racist stuff, but when I watch re-runs of that show I still laugh at his characters antics.

My mother would put cloves in it, and it would become like the center piece of the meal.  I tried eating it again 20 years later, and found some pretty disgusting things in it, like veins the size of a large macaroni noodles.  And I remember laughing at the can that said, "New and Improved Spam."

sandwiches in general. Sandwiches were like the staple at our house. Six kids and dad was a bricklayer, every dime had a need. When I started working for him lunch at a diner was a once in month thing. Everyday was bologna, mayo and onion cept I tossed the onion. Every day…every fucking day….years of sandwiches. Loved them then. you can't even get me into a subway without a fight. I might have a sandwich once on 6 months now. When we go out on the boat the wife wants to take sandwiches…fine take em. I grab the grill and a filet.  Fuck that shit, I may die poor but goddamit, Ill be well fed.

aitm, that reminds me of liverwurst and onion sandwiches.  I ate those through my 20's even.
I tried it again a few months ago because my mom still eats those, but the liverwurst was just so....gamey and strong.  Yeck. Still love me some onions though!

I'm with you on Pizza AND Sandwhiches now, though m problem with sandwiches now is the bread.  I just switched to making wraps, so I can still pile goodies into something easy to travel with.

There are so many foods!  I used to enjoy Mac n Cheese (real cheese, velveeta, and even kraft powdered crap). Now it totally grosses me out, even the "real" stuff.  Starchy noodles covered in oily cheddar cheese and fatty milk and butter.  No thanks.  I have the same problem with Grilled Cheese sandwiches.

Ice cream.  I used to enjoy it quite a lot as a kid, now I rarely ever want to eat it, even on like 100 degree days.

I used to hate canned tuna, but my dad found this locally smoked and canned stuff that is so good it is like candy, and now I LOVE it!  But specifically that, not all tuna.

White bread--ate a ton of it as a kid.  Can't stand it now.  But I do love bread, still.  Dave's Killer Bread.  Yep--that's the name of it.  Full of whole grains and very heavy.

You know, I can't think of the last time I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and that was my go-to lunch for the first twenty years of my life.  I just got no desire for them anymore.

Now, I still do peanut butter and bacon sandwiches.  And peanut butter and Miracle Whip.  But the ol' PB&J just doesn't do it for me anymore.

Glad to be of assistance.  It has several types--21 Whole Grains is my fav.  As the story goes, Dave developed this bread while he was in prison.  Don't know of that is true; but that is what I heard.

My dad actually knows Dave.  Dad gleans for soup kitchens in Portland (cause atheists don't do charity work ~giant eye roll~), and Dave donates all of his "day old" bread from his main Portland store.  Dad says he's a cool guy.  Never heard the prison story, but wouldn't be surprised.

My dad brings me a loaf of the sprouted whole grain stuff now and then when he comes to visit, it's my favorite.

"Classic" movies? Holy shit, they couldn't act worth a fuck! The over acting was more the norm as if the person watching could see the guy twist his neck and raise his eyes as his buddy closed in to save him from the mugger but the mugger standing in front of him was too stupid to know what that look meant. I can't watch them anymore.

The movie Things To Come. Watch it once. See the cream of British acting aristocracy overact and mug to an H.G. Wells plot.

I loved it too when it played in the theaters back in the 60s.  A couple of years ago, I rented it and sat down filled with anticipation.  I don't think I finished watching it.  I have no idea why that movie seemed so important when it first came out.

Besides Mrs. Robinson's legs and Simon and Garfunkel songs (which I still love), I remember the word 'Plastics".  And how that is now correct.  Plastic is everywhere.  I tried to remember why I liked it so much and I don't remember why.

I remember that line too, probably more than anything else about the movie.  Well, the cross through the door handles of the church.  I remember that.  But why would "plastics" stick in my mind, like that?  Weird.
