Hidden Figures 10/10.  My daughter liked it too.  I remember those good old days, though I came into it at the end of the mainframe era, not the beginning.

Rodger Corman's Deathrace 2050  0/10

I'm not sure why they made this film.  Contender for Worst Film Ever.  Sophomoric beyond belief.

The premise is so absurd and laughable that it could make for some dark satire if done well.  One scene that I remember about the Deathrace 2000 movie was when nurses wheeled out wheelchair-bound patients onto the road for the racers to run over for points.  So messed up, but honestly, sorta funny in a twisted way.

A skilled director could really play up how this is a diseased society severely lacking empathy and basic human decency and how this bloodsport acts as a distraction from their horrible society.  If they made it ridiculously over the top, it could be enjoyable, even funny (in a black comedy sort of way)

I think it did attempt to take it in that direction.  I suspected it was trying to satirize something, but it was very poor satire.  Not clever, just childish.  It seemed like it was written by an elementary school kid.  The actors appeared to be trying to mimic really bad actors.  So it might have been a satire of bad movies, in addition to one particular movie.  However, the movie itself was bad.  I did laugh once, but when 1000 absurd things are thrown at you in rapid succession, something is bound to strike you as kind of funny.  The rest of the time it was obvious they were trying to be funny, but my reaction was almost always, "That's not funny."  Sometimes I might think, "Well, that's better, but it's still not funny."

Yeah, I guess you're right.  27% rotten tomatoes audience rating doesn't speak well of it.  Workable (if insane) premise that could only work if implemented in exactly the right way.

And now for something completely different:

I feel like this would have made the prequels 420% better.

The Accountant. The movie plot is nothing new. The correlation into multiple mental "deficiencies" such as autism's or in this case, how having it can increase the brains functionality in ways we were not prepared to understand, was interesting. 6. But like most movies for me, no interest to see it again.

Shin Godzilla.

I didn't like it at first. I thought this version of Godzilla was just too "out there" and weird looking. I've watched it a few more times and warmed up to it since then. Good movie, but definitely one for veterans of the franchise.

I rewatch movies a lot.  Not all of them, but some call for watching again 3 or 4 times.  Having the feel of a movie that contains surprises, makes rewatching interesting, as you look for little hints or aspects of a character's personality that help create the surprise.  And sometimes movies are just plain fun to watch again.  Like your Godzilla experience, some movies fail the first time around, but for reasons I don't fully understand, I rewatch them and they seem to get better.  Guardians of the Galaxy didn't do much for me the first time I saw it, but after watching maybe 4 times, I now think, "Damn!  That's a good movie."

Imho, it's the most entertaining Marvel movie so far.  Plus, they really nailed Starlord, Rocket, and Groot.  My only major gripe is that Gamora and Ronan don't more closely resemble their comics personalities.

I never read the comics, so I might have been unprepared for the movie.  Usually Marvel heroes are little more realistic, so I tend to expect that all the time.  But a hero raccoon and a talking tree?  WTF?  I knew that was coming when I saw it at the theater, but my reaction was already biased toward the idea that the whole thing was going to be just nuts.

I happened to watch it the 4th time a couple of nights ago.  Rocket the raccoon is an absolute riot of sarcasm and humor and his delivery of the lines has an exponential effect:  He gives in to the group, and says with a tone of self loathing, "OK, I'm in.  So here we are, all standing in a circle of solidarity, like a bunch of jerks."  Not that funny without the context or Rocket's delivery, but when Rocket says those lines, I laugh almost to the point where I lose consciousness.  It's like a Marvel movie bent on pointing out how ridiculous all of the other Marvel movies are.

And the big dumb half naked muscle guy, Drax, never gets the metaphors, and always responds totally inappropriately:  "Nothing goes over my head. I'd just reach up and grab it."  But as big and dumb as he is, he always exudes a tender likeable quality, as do all the others.

The Blue Gamora wards off an unwanted seduction:  "Get away from me.  I want nothing to do with your pelvic sorcery."

And Groot, he's just a loveable tree.  How can you feel that way about a tree?  I seldom develop such positive feelings for characters in a movie.

And Chris Pratt is destined for a great future.  As an actor, he can't do anything wrong.  I'll watch anything he does.

Before the movie, I didn't even know the Guardians of the Galaxy existed. lol

Yall need comics.  Guardians of the Galaxy.  2008 series.  Dan Abnett.  Issues 1-25.  I practically guarantee that you'll like it.  After that, whatever magic that made it successful starts wearing out.  It's okay after that, it's just not phenomenal.

One gripe I forgot about the movies, the Nova Corps was bad and Nova didn't make an appearance.  That was disappointing.

But yeah, all the characters in the movie are great.  If you like Starlord, Groot, Rocket, Gamora, and Drax, just wait till you get a load of the comic versions!

Gamora isn't just an action girl, she's the deadliest woman in the galaxy.  She was raised from birth by Thanos to be the perfect assassin.  And man is she good at killing!  After leaving Thanos' service, she's desperately searching for a purpose and finds it with the Guardians.  She's snarky and cynical about Starlord's plans.  You'd never know it from first glance, but she also has a heroic, selfless streak.

Drax isn't just a big dumb brute - he often serves as a protector (guardian, heh) and father figure to another character.  Like Gamora, he's an exceedingly good close combat specialist.  He's not very talkative, but he is intensely observant.  He's here to do two things:  1) kill Thanos  2) protect the people he cares about.

Mantis is an amiable mentor and martial artist.  She can briefly see into the future, serving as a telepathic early warning system.  She's adorable.

Warlock.  Magician extraordinaire.  Like beer, he's the cause of (and solution to) a staggeringly large amount of problems.

Cosmo.  Russian dog cosmologist.  Telepathic communication/telekinesis.  "Speaks" broken english.  Guards the home base and keeps the peace there.  Somehow, he's the most endearing character of them all.

And more!
