Thanks for the suggestion of Three Idiots.  I will definitely watch more clips after the scene where they mix up the professors grading ;-)

Young men from another culture, break the stereotypes ... so it is possible to appreciate again how wonderful it was to be that young.

The musical clip is frat ... but the final scene is sobering ... we had one student commit suicide when I was an undergraduate.

And I had a fellow frat brother flunk out of Freshman year ... because of alcoholism.

I see that Creed, the latest in the Rocky series is getting amazingly good reviews.  Believe it or not, I've never seen any of the Rocky movies. I've seen a few clips of the original, and the one with Mr. T. But not seen any of them complete. If I see this one, will I have trouble understanding the references to the other movies? Like I have no idea who Creed is supposed to be the son of.  Anybody seen Creed and can comment?

I loved Spectre.  I know that it has only gotten modest reviews, not as good as Skyfall.  Well, at least for me, I loved Skyfall but I loved this one even more.  I was not expecting a more subdued pace, more like a mystery than an action movie or a Bond movie.  Yes, there are action set pieces.  But, even they are more restrained than expected.  In some ways, it has a few more touches of the classic Bond than the other Daniel Craig movies. It has Blofelt.  It has Q.  It has some gadgets. It has Moneypenny.  But it still has a way different feel than Bond films usually do.  I found it surprising and fun.

Godzilla (2014) - 9/10

Very entertaining.

Rebirth of Mothra Trilogy - 7/10

Definitely aimed much more at kids compared to the majority of Godzilla films, as indicated by a much lower effects budget and a focus on child characters. The twin fairies (shobijin) are gone, replaced by ancient aliens called the Elias who mostly serve the same role. Lora and Moll fill the role of Mothra's priestesses, while their sister Belvera is the main antagonist of the first two films (later becomes and anti-hero). The star of the show is not Mothra, but rather the son of Mothra: Mothra Leo. Though he is still called Mothra within the films, he is a different character with his own powers and personality. Over the course of the trilogy, he fights two new monsters and one that returns from the Godzilla franchise: Desghidorah, Bagahra, and King Ghidorah. Very entertaining, if you can forgive the low budget.

If you watch it in English, be aware of these things:

-Desghidorah's name is a botched translation. It should be "Death Ghidorah."
-Moll is called "Mona" in the first film for some reason.
-The English dub often refers to Mothra Leo as a she, even though he is confirmed to be male.
-The third film was dubbed much later than the others, and has a different English dubbing cast.
-Bagahra is called "Bagarla" in the English dub for some reason.

No Escape with uh……what his face..um….dammit,,,hang on….(googles) oh yeah, Owen Wilson. Not a bad flick, good action, pretty much non-stop but most of all, very believable action. No crazy shit. Not bad. I would say about a 7.5

Haven't seen it, but I'm supposing Creed must be the son of Apollo Creed, who was Rocky's first (I think) match for the Heavy Weight Title.  In that movie or in a subsequent film in the trilogy, Rocky and Apollo become good friends after the fight.  So I assume in the new movie, Rocky becomes a mentor to young Creed out of friendship and respect for this father.  At least, that's how I would do it if I were a Hollywood writer.

Maze Runner (2014) - 6/10

It starts out well, with a mystery just waiting to be unraveled and .... tanks. Becomes this action-something-evil-illuminati-whatever stupid story in the end. The Maze itself never gets that much attention, but the Glade is well done. Hopefully they won't do the same deal in the sequel.

Krampus (2015) - 7/10

Loved the characters, especially German Grandma and the homicidal gingerbread men, and the off beat humor was pretty entertaining.  I liked the Henson-esque Krampus and elves too, nice touch.  I think the story was lacking a little bit, but still worth a visit to the movie theater.

American Ultra 9/10 -  For being a unique surprise.

I love it when movies step outside of the Hollywood formula just a bit and cross over into what the general Hollywood target audience considers too untypical to be taken seriously.  Sometimes such movies fail miserably, but every once in a while, they hit pay dirt.  I like the regular movies that over and over rework the same concepts that have met success before too, but when there is something unique about a movie that slaps me in the face and wakes me up from the usual movie humdrum, I appreciate it immensely.

American Ultra centers around the CIA trying to terminate one of their trained assassins, who unknowingly breaks protocol, and now he must fight for his life.  OK, we've seen this plot line like what? 50 times?  Finally, someone realized this plot has become an embarrassing cliché, and thought it might be time to have some fun with it by making it just a little bit twisted.

Usually the folks at Langley are scripted as a well trained and formidable force that the hero has to thwart to stay alive.  In this this movie, the CIA, while dangerous enough, seems to be operating in the middle of an acid trip (OK, I exaggerated.  Maybe it's more like I'm watching the movie from the middle of my acid trip).  I wouldn't call it goofball by any means.  It's a refreshing surprise.  While I laughed a lot, I was never sure if the director was aiming at being serious or not.

I realize few people would give it a high score.  But I'm buying a copy for myself.
