Dry Ben: No biggie, people near the impact zone can just sell their houses.

Just another Liberal agenda to turn America into a Socialist, Communist, society, where they have complete control over everyone's lives. Meteors kill only 91 people a year, and they want us to shut everything down just for one space rock?

I try.  :P

Sometimes a Pokemon reference or simple pun falls flat and I wonder if I've been dropped off on planet Vulcan.

"A recently discovered 1,300-foot-wide (400 meters) asteroid that passed near Earth last month could pay the planet another close visit in 2032. But, NASA officials say there is nothing to fear, as the odds that the space rock will hit Earth are extremely slim."
We 'new atheists' have a reputation for being militant, but make no mistake  we didn't start this war. If you want to place blame put it on the the religious zealots who have been poisoning the minds of the  young for a long long time."

You're referring to 2013 TV135, of course.  Next flyby:  August 26th, 2032.  Like many near-Earth asteroids, its trajectory has been refined as more data comes in.  Very unlikely, as in ~1 in 63,000 chance.  I wish the media would quote that part and not "Gov says nothing to fear" because I know (and likely they know) that this sort of dismissal only increases fear.

2013 TV135 has a Torino scale of 1.  Currently, nothing is rated above a 4.  Apophis is the current record-holder at 4, and even that has basically no chance of hitting Earth in 100 years.

Though don't get too comfy, there's likely a lot of near-Earth asteroids that we don't know about and we don't get too much advance warning or have much in place should a big one come right for us.  If you really want to clench your butt muscles, you can always check out the list of close approaches and note their sizes.  Lotsa close calls.  (for reference, low Earth orbit extends out to around 2,000 km, so stuff clocking in at ~9,000 km is SUPER close)

edit - I'm not joking about SUPER close.

Around 4,500 times more likely than winning Powerball, LOL.

The lotteries are voluntary taxes, the "it's the size of Texas, Mr. President" rocks not so much.

Yep, and the whole world is sharing the same ticket.  Versus Powerball where millions of tickets are sold and even then, sometimes no one wins that day.
