John McCain was born in Panama. He father was stationed there in the military. As such he is considered a natural born American citizen.

Cruz is a little different. Born in Canada, but his mother was an American citizen. Many interpret that as making him a natural born US citizen.

But... SCOTUS has never ruled on the question and until they do there will be no definitive answer to does that make someone born to an American citizen outside of the US a natural born citizen or not.

He likely wouldn't have a problem there, despite having technically been born outside of the US.

And you can bet it was brought up when it comes to his and the Republican party's stance against immigration.  Note that I didn't specify illegal immigration.

Apparently, the real bone of contention is if you're Hawaiian and wear a tan suit.  That's way more of an outrage than all the myriad horrible things involving immigration policies and immigration enforcement.  Because reasons.
