Quote from: Blackleaf on October 24, 2023, 12:41:27 PMThere are actually some humans there in the first movie, who are there to study or build relationships with the Na'vi. The whole reason the Na'vi speak English is because of the schools humans built for them. Although, they shouldn't logically ALL speak English as fluently as they do. I would hope if we ever found alien life and had the ability to get to them, studying them would be our primary concern, but maybe that wouldn't be profitable enough.

Well, hopefully when we do meet extraterrestrial life, we don't turn out to be the Ferengi.

It really shouldn't feel like I dodged a bullet, James Cameron.
Don't give it a chance.

Very few of Na'vi speak English. You must have been getting popcorn when Tully talked about his transition to Na'vi.

I assume you were meaning to quote me. The Na'vi may have their own language, but they barely use it in the movies. I expected to have to read more subtitles in the second movie, since the aquatic Na'vi seem more isolated than the forest variants, but that wasn't the case. Everyone conveniently speaks English.

I am deeply upset by the culture appropriation of the Na'vi by this woman. Next thing you know she will have a bow and arrow or something.

FFS Blackleaf. Ever watched an Italian movie? It's filmed IN ITALIAN. But you saw it dubbed into English.

Terence Hill and Bud Spencer are always a lot of fun to watch! In Double Trouble they're even more fun than usual!
Terence Hill is a stuntman who flies ultralights for fun. Bud Spencer is a musician who plays a jazz saxophone.
They are exact doubles of a couple of rich guys who have assassins out to kill them. The rich guys hire, for a million bucks, the stuntman and the musician to pretend to be them for a week.
A wild romp ensues!

I saw them in a Western. They were visiting Mom in the most gawdawful shanty and they're woofing down the grub.

Spencer: This is better than you used to make when we were kids. What is it?

Mom: I don't know. It had been circling the cabin for three days, so I shot it.

My favorite Terence Hill movie is My Name is Nobody, with Henry Fonda. He was in a movie a long time ago with Ernest Borgnine called Super Fuzz that was funny as hell. But I have a great fondness for the westerns he does with Bud Spencer.

I assumed that was due to the translation convention (foreign language sounds foreign at first, then appears translated/dubbed so that the audience can understand it with the implication that it's not really english)

Ah. Maybe. Given how hard they went to make the alien world look real (seriously, none of it is real, not even the water), it's a little odd they stop their mission for total immersion at the alien language.

I don't know who you thought you were quoting, but it wasn't me. Even if you included my post, because you didn't read it.
