This is an interesting video on why hazing happens and how it strengthens group affiliation. Groups like fraternities are the focus but obviously this dynamic works with other organizations. When I was younger I never understood why anyone would want to join a fraternity but this video provides a good explanation.

I think it's more of an alpha thing, not a male thing. As a female that lived in female dorms in college and female barracks in the military, trust me, hazing isn't exclusive to the boys. I think people tend to perceive males as being more dominant and aggressive, and perhaps the hazing
tactics they use are.
I grew up with nothing that resembles that. I mean, fraternity and what have you seem alien to me.
