Fire it up! And just in case, make a sign and put it outside the pull of a theoretical black hole that could form that says "Warning, firing up the LHC now." Remove sign if test goes off without a hitch. Smile

A meter from said black hole ought to do it.

Heh, no one looked at my fourth option: iv) If no discovery of new particles takes place, then this would be just as intriguing.

Anyone remembers that the null result of the Michelson-Morley experiment -- they were to measure the Earth's drag velocity through the Aether, which was postulated to account for the existence of electromagnet waves from Maxwell's equations, predicted and then verified by Hertz. Their null result -- no drag speed -- led to Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

So, suppose that no new particles are discovered by the LHC... no Higgs boson, no susy partners, and untold number of papers published in reputable journals all amounting to nothing.

Hum, delightfully scary...

That's science Laughing
Every time you think you have it figured out, someone comes and disproves it.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) can achieve an energy that no other particle accelerators have reached before, but Nature routinely produces higher energies in cosmic-ray collisions.

now we only need a mad scientist to get a hold of this "LHC" and take earth as hostage.

this stuff if so awesome (future physicist)

The surprise with the LHC might very well be that there are no surprises -- meaning no new particles to be discovered. Strangely enough, if such is the case, the whole world of physics will be turned upside down...

I don't really see how he would take the world hostage. Only the uneducated would fear the fact that he could give a particle as much energy as your average baseball.

Starling, without the pursuit of scientific knowledge, we're pretty much just trading stocks and buying clothes all day. Quite the utopia you've imagined, huh?

An alternative to the Higgs boson, the "Holy Grail" of LHC efforts which is responsible for assigning masses to elementary particles,
is the search for a new dimension, which could provide an alternative explanation for the slew of particles that make up Standard model...

Another major development: the event of a ZZ pair. This is thought to be a prelude to the Higgs boson, the most sought-after particle.

NOTE: the weak nuclear force is mediated by three bosons: W+, W-, and Z. The pairing of ZZ is a rare event -- you need 200 trillion proton-antiproton collisions, so finding these pairs is like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack.

The excitement is mounting at CERN. Some of the most basic questions about matter, the universe and what is our place in the cosmologic drama are about to be examined.

Let the Proton Smashing Begin.

The LHC undergoes initial testing August 9th, which is my birthday.

NEWSWORTHY 23RD BIRTHDAY FTW
