So, you were lying. I'm not surprised.

Hardly. They just didn't believe in beating or abusing their children. |
SJC making a strawman out of a position?
NO!!
lol... i know that you'll never admit this, SJC, but there IS a difference between spanking a child in order to correct/alter behavior and beating a child.
Dude, if you never did anything that could've got you seriously hurt or killed as a kid.. yeah, you were BOoooOOOOOoooring! _________________ -=The Believer is Happy; the Skeptic is Wise=-

Kid: hum tee too, I'm about to do something that might kill me like see if my tongue can fit in a light socket.
Mom: Whack! Don't do that! You might hurt yourself. I'm the only one allowed to hurt you! _________________ K Michau

because flawless logic, persuasive rhetoric and calm reason will be fully appreciated and understood by a rambunctious 2 to 8 year old child.
I'm all for treating children as people. But if.. IF... its a choice between smacking my child on the bottom to keep them from running into a busy street or saying.. "hey... um.. yeah.. you might not want to into the path of that... lorry.." i'm gonna go with whatever is more effective for the safety of my child.
If.. IF... a child responds equally well to simple admonishment, then that is what should be used.
I was a little adventurer when i was kid. Even though my parents told me and told me to not ride my bike blindly out of our rather hidden driveway into the street, i didn't listen to them.. after i almost got hit by a car (my friend in front of me DID) and got a severe butt-whooping, you better believe i changed my behavior.
when i was child i would NOT do things because i knew if i did them, i'd get spanking... i had no concept of the real dangers in the world. having my mother simply wag her finger at me was only laughable. Frankly, if my parents HADN'T have spanked me when i needed it, i'd probably be dead. I'm thankfull that they cared enough about my well being to do what it took to correct my behavior and make me safe. _________________ -=The Believer is Happy; the Skeptic is Wise=-

I love ya SJC, i do!
but, i'm a little hurt that you would rather have me been seriously wounded or killed as a child... |
In that case maybe they should have locked you up in the basement in a cage. Then you would have been really safer from the world.... My parent didn't beat me as a child and yet I was never serious hurt and even killed. |
Yeah, because your mom hit you with the super soaker every time you stopped reading Mother Jones or tried to look out of the window. In your case, there was a HUGE need for corporal punishment. Every day. By a hot, leather clad blond who told you what a bad boy you were. |

Speaking of parenthood a somewhat disturbing thought has crossed my mind.
What if all this stuff we write on forums will be remain online long enough for our children to see what mommy and daddy wrote a while ago... _________________

Well one, I would never be ashamed or worried about anything of mine that my children read. And two, that would also mean that they know my screen name. If actors and comedians are okay with it, I don't see why I shouldn't be. With that said: Cunt-Jumper! |

Nice!
I was "Hymen_Blood_Clot" on the old Yahoo AvC chats. There was something delicious about seeing: "Hymen_Blood_Clot, if you don't care about your soul then yes, you will burn in Hell for all eternity". |

From wikipedia
"In the modern world, corporal punishment remains a common way of disciplining children. Although it has been outlawed[1] in 16 European countries, and in Israel, most legal systems permit parents to use mild corporal punishment on their children."
The answer to your question is one is illegal and one is not (depending which country the person lives in). But you have already stated without knowlege of the persons counties laws that no matter what its "totally unforgivable." For those who have seen the movie office space "jump to conclusions mat" comes to mind. |
It's something far more simple: Intent. _________________ "The first principle is that you must not fool yourself - and you are the easiest person to fool" --- Richard P. Feynman
