All this talk about american football makes me think it's time for a little football appreciation. Y'know. That goofy sport where they actually (snicker) play a BALL with the FOOT. In the USA it's called scoccer.
Here are some of the greatest dutch soccermoments EVURRR. I'd love it if the Brits here could dig up some gems to post here too. Few things are more gratifying to watch than a gem of a goal.
Marco was considered such a threat in the penalty-zone, that he ultimately got the shit kicked out of his ankle, and had to retire from the game far too soon. The final part of the vid reflects on that.
JOHAN CRUYFF
(No# 14 The Legend)
Wikipedia:
"If Holland were the team that gave the world Total Football, then Johan Cruyff was THE Total Footballer. Cruyff was one of a number of youngsters who emerged with Ajax of Amsterdam in the late Sixties and came to dominate European and world football in the early Seventies.
Cruyff was the most outstanding of them all and was widely seen as the natural successor to Pelé as the world's greatest player. As a player, Cruyff was known for his technical ability: his mesmeric ball skill, speed and acceleration, the ability to change direction at will and his tactical insights make him one of the most gifted footballers of all time."

Lol.
You should have called it the "football" thread, so that the Americans would get suckered into viewing what the thread was really about.
Buy the way, my American friends, how does it make you feel when people in your country spend $250,000,000 on ONE MAN who plays a sport that most of your country doesn't even care about?

I was kind of curious about what non-Americans thought of him coming here. For the record, the media is a bunch of idiots in reporting the $250 mil thing like that's his MLS contract. His actual contract is something more to the tune of $8 mil a year, which is nothing outrageous as far as big name athletes go, and the rest is a seperate endorsement deal that has nothing to do with the football pitch.
Honestly, I think it's a pretty good deal for both sides. It gives Beckham a lot of money and exposure in a basically untapped market that'll give both him and his wife movie, etc. opportunities in Hollywood. And he'll get to be a star on his team again after riding the pine in Madrid. The MLS gets one of the most recognized names in sports worldwide and with the new rule opens the window for pulling in other European talent. And whether he's a bust on the field or not he'll still sell buttloads of jerseys around the world and many more tickets to games that should more than make up for the pricetag. As a soccer player and fan, I'd be much more likely to take a ride down to Washington and see a DC United game against LA to see him play. The issue of it being a sport Americans don't care about is bound to change, because today's generation of kids are growing up playing soccer instead of Little League baseball. That's only really been possible in the last 10 years so it'll take some time. _________________ "The very existence of flame throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, 'You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.' - George Carlin

Cruyff is, by the way, famous for his peculiar way of expressing his logical insights. "Every disadvantage has it's advantage" remains a classic Cruyffism.
Here's another gem
""I'm not religious. In Spain all 22 players make the sign of the cross before they enter the pitch. If it worked, it would always be a draw."

Nice post Jutter
Cruyff, Van Basten and even Bergkamp, (bloody Gooners ) were all great. The Dutch/Hollanders have produced some fine players over the years, some of the greats. You know you will always get a good game when England play Holland, we have good friendly rivalry and the play style is similar.
OK being a spurs fan, (born n bred Norf Londoner ) Here's a few of my favs starting off with Paul Gascoigne (aka Gazza), who would have been one of the greats if it wasn't for all the beer n pies!

Actually soccer is one of the few sports I can watch and not be bored. Baseball is like tons more boring, I've even had baseball fans agree with me on that before

Here's one for Jutter
Heh. I can't be selfish now, and such a devastating victory -against the Dutch no less- must have surely been a fieldday for the English supporters. In spite of the goalkeeper being passed through the legs at the end. And yes, Gazza at his best was a delight to watch, reminescent of vintage Maradonna.
Other countries that offer an exciting match against Holland are the Irish, Spain and Portugal, because these, like England, are skillful attacking teams.
I hate it if one of the team is overly defensive, playing counter-football. Sweden and Itally come to mind.
When push comes to shove, I'm not overly chauvenistic, and I was genuinly happy for underdog Greece, when they took the european championship (thanks to a brilliant austrian coach) through tactical superiority. During the preceiding worldcup, on a simillar note, dutch coach Guus Hiddink helped South Korea rise above itself most impressively. I like seeing that more, than when the dutch team is noticably uninspired on the field. They can be excrusiating to watch at moments like that, or jolly good fun for supporters of the opposing team. _________________ ~ Let us be reasonable ~

Oh behave. You don't see me snoring in threads about musclebound men running around with a leather egg do you?
All kidding aside; highlight footage has been offered, so the uninitiated can perhaps discover that the game does have it's moments. Ultimately tastes can differ of course, but If someone can't even be bothered with tasting, the real issue is an attitude best described by this old dutch expression: "What the peasant don't know, the peasant won't eat." (wat de boer niet kent blieft hij niet)
It's in a thread like this, that the people of culture are seperated from the peasants. _________________ ~ Let us be reasonable ~

Them sissies in shorts wouldn't last a minute against..........DA BEARS at Soldier Field in January!
Unfortunately the gathering will be at Wembly, and after a rapid fire of red cards (what's called proper tactics in american football is considered a faul in scoccer) those sissies in shorts would still be standing (because they're used to taking blows without padded protective gear) opposed by nothing but chalk lines.
Final score: gazillion-nil.
Check out the final part of that Van Basten compilation, and see for yourself what kind of shit that 'sissy boy' had to put up with on the field. _________________ ~ Let us be reasonable ~
