Hey people, I am a 15 year old atheist from New York. My school is mostly composed of Jewish and Christian folks, pretty much all of whom have been confirmed or bar/batmitzfa'd. It makes me feel extremely isolated, but at times it is fun for it to be that way. I know maybe 2 people who don't believe in god in my school. On every forum I go on (mostly sports related), I always get into arguments about it, sometimes the close minded views of religious people can be very frustrating. Unlike many atheists I have met I would classify myself as "extreme". Many disagree with this "as the right thing to do", but I will ALWAYS argue with a religious person if they bring something up about god, the bible, or whatnot. Arguing and debating is fun for me and it is so easy to dominate arguments with people who follow the bible. My parents were never religious, though they made me go to "jewish school" when I knew no better at age 1-6. Once I started growing I realized how religion in general is a hoax and the torah, bible, and other religious works are just fables. I recently wrote a 6 page research paper for my English class about "religion vs. science" and I have not received the grade yet, . It is probably the first time I have ever "liked" writing an essay, it was very fun. This is kind of unrelated, but I also strongly appose the pledge of allegiance (and it is not just because of the "under god" line). I haven't done it for 5 years and recently I had a substitute teacher in math class. He is the football coach, really tough guy, and I have never said a word to him. He starts yelling "everyone up, we're doing the pledge!!!". I of course don't stand and he walks up to me and starts yelling at me. He yelled, "Do it! Stand up! I am telling you to stand! Listen to me!" I just kept insisting, "no, I will not stand up, I haven't for a long time and I am not about to do it now". He got all pissy and walked away. Later a girl said "at least I stood up for the pledge", and I replied "at least I stood up for what I believed in".
Well that last part was a little irrelevant, but I am curious on your views of the pledge too.
So I don't know what kind of people post here, but I am hoping to show stories and talk about atheism with you all.
Thanks,
Ben
PS - I'm not some weird kid who is extremely liberal or anti-social or anything, I am a normal person. Just clearing up the common perception of someone who would be into atheism as much as me, lol. At least that's what I would think someone would assume. |

Welcome Ben.
When I was a child it was not an option to not recite the pledge. I did however refuse the one nation under god line.
Enjoy your stay! _________________ Join http://www.sefora.org/

Very Nice. Don't paste your six page paper here, but feel free to talk about your main points. People here would like to here about your main points and add comments to it. You'll get feedback on it.

I don't believe in the pledge since I don't believe in nationalism or patriotism. I admire your conviction to your belief, but what do you believe? What did you make a stance for?
Welcome aboard. |
