stephen hawking atheist or not?

Understood.

Are there other people within science you look up to or is Hawkings your favorite?

My heros are: N.T. Wright, John Polkinghorne, Anne Rice, Stephen Hawkings, John Dominac Crossan, Bono, Pope John Paul 2...... There are people in my personal life who have inspired me, but since the world does not know them it is pointless to post.
