I just watched Starship Troopers 3 (Its not officially out yet).

It was pretty good. I had a lot of fun watching it and it had a really hilarious anti-religious bent. The main message is..... Religion is the PERFECT way to control people.

Hallelujah!

Being a massive Heinlein fan, ill tell you that he considered religion, of ANY type, to be one of the BIGGEST farces ever imposed upon mankind. One may debate the man from mars but honestly it was intended as a more philosophical view and not religious. I have yet to see the movie (the first was campy but cool in a retro-50's way, but lacked power armor, and the 2nd was TERRIBLE by any means), but i would love to see some of his works get a GOOD film made of them. It would probably end up being perhaps the most atheistic movie ever made....imagine Time Enough For Love, with Lazarus Long, in film format and at 4-6 hours long.....WOW....

This movie was kind of interesting in that one particularly anti-religious person becomes religious at the end, and yet the overall message is that that religion is a farce that the powerful use to control and manipulate the weak (ie, the masses).

This one was made for 20 million, ST2 (which i never saw but heard only bad things about) was done for 7 and the original was for 100. But the original was about 10 years ago. 10 years of technological advances means that for 20 million they were able to match the original when it came to special effects. And the guy who played the main character in the first one (Rico) is the main character in this one.

Btw, I haven't read as much Heinlein as I should but I really liked Stranger in a Strange Land. There were a lot of themes in that book that my fairly religious mind wasn't so sure about that now looking back made a lot of sense.

Many gnostic sorts of themes that I really enjoy now. In many ways I consider myself a gnostic (sort of an atheist gnostic if thats possible)

Heinlein gives religion a good ass-kicking in Stranger in a Strange Land too. If people take away the idea that "religion is wonderful" from that book, then they need some help. Heinlein basically predicted the giant Mega-Mall-Churches and their absurdity. The book is more about open-mindedness and taking away the big lesson of the eastern religions, which is to chill and be humble.

Indeed, I own the first one, never heard of the sequels.

Starship Troopers 2 was a terrible film, that's why no one's heard of it!

ST2, like ST3, was direct to video. I've never seen it, but, I've see it on the discount rack at Walmart all the time.

I've never read a good thing about ST2. None of the actors (or even characters, i think) from the first one are in the second. It was made on a shoestring budget and supposedly is one of the most horrible movies ever. Actually, that means I may enjoy it since I am able to get a sick pleasure out of really horrible, horrible, bad movies.

This new one was done on a better budget, has the main character as the first one and the same actor plays him. With advances in technology, as I said before, I thought the special effects were pretty good given the 20million budget. Not jaw-dropping, but not cheezy.

But even if it had horrible acting and horrible special effects, it has some really good humor in it and as I said, its perspective on religion in general is absolutely delicious.

MST3k i take it? Me and my firends are also fans of REALLY bad movies, we like to give them our own MST treatment over a few beers. Good for lots of laughs and good times.

Yeah, me and a few people I know share a love for horrible movies and have similar rituals: a few beers, or a smoke combined with many laughs.

My best friend's brother is a bad movie mega-collector and always saves up the very worst for when we visit. Its always a good time.

So, you make your very own MST moments? Very Happy I love watching bad movies, but I never realized there were sequels to Starship Troopers.
