The Florida Board of Education will soon vote on new science standards. They appropriately place evolution at the center of biology and are therefore under some attack from the usual suspects. If you want to sign an online petition supporting the standards, here is the link.

The germane part starts on p.41 of the pdf _________________ The path of least resistance and least trouble is a mental rut already made. It requires troublesome work to undertake the alternation of old beliefs.

Welcome to the 19th Century.
"Polls, though, suggest the public is split. And the board may be as well.
At last count, two members had indicated support for the standards, two appeared to be leaning against, and the rest were either undecided or unwilling to say. "

Isn't it like having the general public vote on medical procedures? Shouldn't the educated Doctors have the final say on medicine?
Shouldn't the scientists have the final say on what is science? _________________ Join http://www.sefora.org/

The Dover school board cost that district $2 million. It would seem lawyers for the state and for the local school boards are going to weigh in if the committee buckles under. In addition, there are a great many decisions from the courts that would give even the most backward school boards cause for hesitation if they try to slip ID in or any such nonsense. _________________ The path of least resistance and least trouble is a mental rut already made. Just to close out the story, apparently there was some sort of compromise with the word "theory" added to the standards in various spots. Maybe next time the word theory will be defined in the standards each time as "a coherent set of principles or statements that explain a large set of observations or findings". Of course, that would sort of ruin it for the appeased constituency.

One of the bullet points on the linked pdf was (paraphrasing) "Describe scientific explanations for the origination of life on earth"
