Quote:
The Indian government has withdrawn a controversial report submitted in court earlier this week which questioned the existence of the Hindu god Ram.

The report was withdrawn after huge protests by opposition parties.

The report was presented to the Supreme Court on Wednesday in connection with a case against a proposed shipping canal project between India and Sri Lanka.

I guess they want to carve out part of it so that ships can get through without having to go all the way around Sri Lanka. But the island serves as a buffer between hurricanes and the coast of India, and there is some worry that disturbing the bridge might interfere with that. Somehow, I don't think Rama and his monkeys will care one way or the other.

It's the 21st century, but it's still too soon to question the reality of Ram and his divine monkey army.

Could you image the US Army Corps issuing a report that Jesus didn't rise from the dead (like a zombie)? There would be a shit storm from both parties.

The government in a new representation to the Supreme Court did not mention Rama but said there is no bridge and that the canal should be made.

This is the price that the present government had to pay for the Tamil party (DMK) for supporting it in the recent vote of confidence in the parliament. What is involved is 5 billion dollars of contracts for making the canal and an yearly expenditure of 1.5 billion dollars each year to dredge the canal at current costs. This is a windfall for Tamil politicians.

The other thing that is involved and is pushed to the background is the ecological effect of the canal. The area is important for pearl production, there are coral reefs, shrimp fishing etc. The two bays are separated by the geographical feature (the bridge). Deepening it can change the currents in the area. We do not know how will it affect the ecology of the area.

Lastly, the canal will be dug to the depth of 10 meters. That would exclude big ships. Only small vassels will be able to utilize it. The question is whether the same benefit cannot be obtained by a rail and road network in the area that is supposed to be benefited by the canal (if it will!). That could be done at a lesser costs.

It is not Rama but many other things that are involved in the scheme to construct the canal. Just to clarify the picture.

Yes, I am from Delhi (Write in English, other members would not know what we are talking about). About Ram-Setu, it is not just mythology, but much more than that. Many people, in India and outside India, miss the more important points. How about rail and road connections between Tuticorin to Ramanathapuram to Tirumayam.

In India, projects generally go beyond the stipulated time for completion, and the cost many a times doubles or triples. So, I would not be surprised it the costs comes to 10 billion dollars for construction and the annual dredging costs may increase to 3 billion dollars per year. Who cares? It is public money!
