Coming from a mahayana/Zen tradition, none of the texts and sutras that we study mention reincarnation. Buddha the Gospel has no mention (Sakyamuni Buddha said multiple times that was primarily concerned with THIS life and not others), the Heart Sutra, Lotus Sutra, Diamond Sutra. Nothing written by Bodhidharma, Dogen, Rinzai, Zhengjue.

Does anyone know of any scriptural reference to reincarnation in Buddhism?

Nice derail Phil. Didn't even allow a single relevant reply. Your derailing skills are mighty indeed.

I do tend to be, sir, good at what I do. Cool

Should people expect metta from a naraka?

And one more question. Tell me: is sarcasm a healthy form of humor, or not?

Alright, alright. I was just trying to piss off a Buddhist.

So, I flipped through my Dhammapada (my version: tr. by Ananda Maitreya), and found several references to rebirth (I don't think that Buddhists believe in reincarnation as I've said before). So I'm gonna learn ya on that alone, CaliBikkhu. Get a real teacher. Please. Here are your examples.

2:10: By Mindfulness did the Maghavat, Lord of Two Realms reach the position of authority among the gods.

As you'd know, if you didn't have a hippy shit teacher, Maghavat was reborn into that authority because of his previous good deeds.

7:6 - Done with the rounds of rebirth
He is accepting as the earth
As firm as a doorpost
Placid as a pond free of mud, and dutiful

Sounds like rebirth to me... but what do I know? I can only read....

9:11 - Some are reborn in the mother's womb.
The evildoers are bound to miserable states.
The doers of good are reborn to happy states.
Those free of any stain go on to perfect peace.

Huh. Funny that "reborn" shit, huh?

11:8 - How many lives, how many rounds of rebirth
Have I experienced
Without finding a builder of this house?

Goodness... what's Shakyamuni talking about again? Oh, that's right. His previous lives.

Need I go on? My violation of Right Speech is killing me, dawg. So let me just say one more thing. L2R, caliboy.

Oops. Guess where I'll be reborn.... it's gonna suck, so I might as well pile it on. Suck me, bitch.

Metta, bikkhu Wink

If you want more references to rebirth from primary Buddhist sources... well, I'll do it, but ya gotta give me some oral sex for that shit.

ETA: You've read the Lotus Sutra? That shit drives me nuts, personally. And it's tl;dr. At least... thus have I heard... Razz

From Alan Watts he says that in Zen Buddhism reincarnation is more seen as if you think you are the same now as you were just moments ago then you are reincarnating.

Because if you put yourself now and yourself then beside eachother you clearly see its not the same. And the further back you go the bigger the difference. (difference in experiences and thoughts as much as physical).

Alan Watts is very fun to listen to aswell Smile

Tho I guess you want more direct sources, and I am sorry to say I dont have it.

Got a Mahayana source? Otherwise it don't mean sh!t, and you know it. It's ALL about studying the "correct" lineage, period!

Fine, point made. Good job mo-fo. Namaste, a-hole.

Not yet, Sensei is studying it right now (and has been for a few months now ...) I'll read it eventually, but right now I'm reading "Mind of Clover" by Robert Aiken Roshi. It's primarily about the precepts. After that I've got another 4 books lined up (I also have 4 professional books for work lined up). I gots me a lots of readin to do in the next couple of months.

From the classic Buddhist Kōjien Sutra:

1. (Budd.) (Sanskrit saṃsāra "flowing") The concept of creatures building upon a cycle of life and death where they wander in confusion through the three words and six realms like a wheel turning without end. Living repeatedly and dying repeatedly in a world of confusion. Ruten. Rinten. From Utsuho Monogatari: "Rinne shitsuru hitori ga hara ni hasshou tomari" (one who reincarnates time and again spends eight lifetimes in the stomach). ~ Shouji. ~ Tenshou. Ant. Nehan (nirvana).

And yes, reincarnation is a part of Mahayana Buddhism, but maybe not all schools, and maybe not in California. Laughing
