Wow, it all makes perfect sense now!

Thanks for the data.

On a radio program I was listening to once, the DJs were casually talking about reincarnation and some Muslim called up the station and was like....
"Reincarnation is nonsense...why would god recycle souls?"
Heh. |

Here're three examples of rebirth occurring in Mahayanan texts.
"Now, Sariputra, what do you think, were these living beings [beings existing in the 'world-system Bliss'] ever in an animal womb? You should not see it that way. Why is this so? In that buddha-field, Sariputra, even the words for unfortunate rebirths are not known, words for the inhabitants of the hells, or the words for the various forms of rebirth in animal wombs, or for the beings of the realm of Yama."
-Wonderful Panoply of the Land of Bliss (Sukhavativyuha), tr. Donald Lopez
"Thereupon the venerable Subhuti said to the bodhisattva Maiytrea, 'Maiytrea, the Lord has declared you to be one rebirth away from supreme and perfect awakening...'"
-The Dispelling of Ajatasatru's Remorse, tr. Donald Lopez
And my favorite one - from your ass-buddy who cut off his eyelids (and who, according to the "Anthology of the Patriarchal Hall", fucking resurrected):
"Invoking buddhas results in good karma, reciting sutras results in good memory, keeping precepts results in a good rebirth, and making offerings results in future blessings - but no Buddha.
...
Even if [a person] can recite the Twelvefold Canon, he can't escape the Wheel of Birth and Death. He suffers in the three realms without hope of release."
-The Bloodstream Sermon of Bodhidharma, tr. Red Pine
There's really a lot more where that came from.
Dude - there's Mahayanan literature just dealing with the previous lives of the Buddha alone (e.g. the Dhammasondaka - although admittedly, these so-called jataka tales also appear in the Pali canon). Face facts: rebirth is fairly integral to all three major vehicles of Buddhism. Hell - it's one of the many reasons I don't consider myself a Buddhist, even though I just started practicing Vipassana meditation, and take at least the first two Noble Truths to heart. The fact is: most of Buddhism is bullshit. Much of it is interesting to me (but so's Christianity), and there's a small bit of it that's really profound (unlike pretty much all of Christianity). But much of Buddhism's metaphysics is pretty wacky and most likely wrong.
I really do hope that in your next life you won't suck so much.
