No, I believe(d) my mother and family to be deluded on a deep level but nowhere close to phony about it. They absolutely believe what they're spouting.

I thought mine and my church were self righteous hypocrites.

I still enjoy the passages where jesus rails against the self righteous Pharisees and prefers the sinners.

I went along with it, but there was some part of me that knew I wasn't being serious about it. Something told me that it was all just a big joke, and it would be safer to pretend and humor them. Big surprise when I grew up and found out that people were actually serious about that stuff.

Well I'm not from a Christian home per se, but my father is a devout catholic (whilst my mother is an atheist). I didn't think my dad was phony just a REALLY big hypocrite.

I consider my theistic relatives to be emotionally weak, intellectually retarded and easily deluded the same as any other theist... the difference is it actually upsets me that my relatives are like that, it's heart-wrenching. It's like finding out a relative has just had a stroke and now he's a blithering idiot.

Has your father told you the hashish entranced version of this story yet?

Or they could have thought about it objectively, developed a modicum of intelligence and finally dropped religion entirely. It's not by chance that they where theists, it's because they lack willpower and intellect, the only thing that was by chance was which God they ended up worshipping.
