Its worth reading if only for the lulz.
If you can't be arsed (I wouldnt blame you), it is a very long boring read, just skip to revelations. That shit is crazy. _________________ Kindly stick your Quran/Bible/Torah up your holier-than-thou arsehole you square. |

Yes

I think so.

It really doesn't.

Depends on your taste really. I think for the most part it was incredibly boring.

The same way most Christians do: By cherrypicking the scripture they want to teach. _________________ "Shake off all the fears of servile prejudices, underwhich weak minds are servilely crouched. Question with boldness even the existence of a God, for if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear."

It's boring, but if you are going to debate with Christians, confront them on their beliefs, or simply defend yourself from their nonsense, then you should read it. Otherwise, they'll say, "Well, you never read it, so what do you know?" It is like offering a critical review of a movie you never watched. _________________ Kryten: Don't you believe that God exists in all things? Aren't you a Pantheist?

Here's a few things to remember if you are going to read the bible.
This warning should really be in forward...but it's not.
1. The Bible is not a book. It's a collection of ancient sacred history, folklore, mythology, laws, wisdom teachings, poetry, allegories and whacko prophecy.
2. The collection you read was decided by various theocrat committees over time. There are many different 'collections'.
3. Scholars are not certain who wrote the vast majority of it, including the NT gospels.
4. It's been redacted, by again, who knows, how many theocrats.
5. It's been translated from it's original languages. There are various translations available.
6. It's not neccesarily arranged in the chronological order it was written. Especially not the NT.
7. The authors of the bible were probably exclusively men...some of them seem quite cranky.
8. The authors and redactors and translators of the various books of the bible had different theological agendas and target audiences in mind. You were not one of them.
9. The settings in the bible are from ancient near east cultures quite foreign to modern Western culture, thus you may not appreciate the context.
10. It doesn't tell a cohesive story with a happy ending in the least. Thus, don't expect it to be "Harry Jesus Potter and the Night of the Living Dead" _________________ ...Oozing my brain chemicals in your general direction... |

NICE! This should be on the outside sleeve of every bible. _________________ Namaste,

I have read it and found it immensely confusing. I read it through several times since and it still makes no sense. Would I recommend it? Sure but not as a moral guide as it preaches as much hate as good but as an important piece of literature. _________________ God made me an atheist. Who are you to argue with his will? |

Reading the bible for anything more than to increase your reading and understanding abilities is a horrible idea. The bible is full of very bad moral values and shouldn't be taken lightly. _________________ http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/1956/51810958sc2.jpg |

The Song of Solomon is ostensibly written by a woman. And the formidably erudite literary scholar Harold Bloom claims, on internal textual evidence, that the early books of the Old Testament, up to 2 Kings, were written by a single author, who he believes was a non-Jewish woman living at the court of King Solomon. He fingers Solomon's mom, Queen Bathsheba. |

Oh,on that level,so do I When you consider how paternalistic the Abrahamic faiths are, it has a delicious irony.

Judaic Trivia: According to the apocryphal "BookOf Adam and Eve" the first woman was not Eve. Her name was Lilith, an uppity red headed harridan who scared the crap out of Adam. So god banished Lilith and made Eve, who was more docile (that turned out splendidly too) Lilith became Queen of The Demons.. To this day there is a superstitious dread of red headed women.Especially amongst some Hassidic Jews. |
