Uncertainty's point seems reasonable on its face, but there's an assumption here that I don't think is correct, i.e., "it's for people who don't believe in their god." One unusual feature of Judaism among religions is that you don't have to be part of it to believe it's correct. In this light, it is not at all incoherent to address people who acknowledge God's authority but don't choose to take on Jewish identity.
Further, it is not necessary (within the conception of Judaism) to be Jewish in order to be "right with God." (I think someone earlier noted the "righteous of all nations" ticket to the world to come.) A Jew is obligated to observe the 613 commandments, more or less, while a nonJew is only bound by the seven laws of Noah.
Looking at it in terms of its origin, the blasphemy prohibition in the Noachide code is also no problem of coherence, for the simple reason that, prior to Abraham, there were no "Jews." |
