Have you tried the Boston Craigslist? They have that forum for people that live there to chat with each other. You can go on the Atheist or some other part of the board and start talking to people. Or even see if there are Boston boards online.

Hey, for a couple years I lived in Boston. Craigslist is a good resource, as was mentioned. Also, depending on your interests, there are bound to be college mailing lists you can join. They'll clue you into activities you can check out. Personally, when I was there I found a lot of interesting events at MIT that were open to the public.

Is your job in Boston proper, or just somewhere in the metropolitan area? That makes a huge difference.

Vaguely, what income bracket would you be in? "Fairly lucrative" varies a lot depending on zip code.

Generally speaking, I would highly recommend that you try to live as close as possible to where you're going to work. In some cities, a long commute is totally doable, but in Boston driving can be a nightmare.

If you work somewhere on one of the subway lines, you have more freedom in choosing where you're going to live. Many professionals from elsewhere like living in the Arlington / Cambridge / Lexington area. These communities are kinda expensive, but they're really nice, they're safe from crime, there are plenty of nice restaurants and things to do, and the T station is accessible. Within that little part of the metro area, don't live in Somerville if you can help it, unless you plan on not having a car.

On the city side of the river, a lot of people like Jamaica Plains and Allston.

This page http://wikitravel.org/en/Boston has some good info and a lot of opinions.

My opinions aren't always the same as these, but these are probably just as good for your purposes.

Thanks for those who suggested craigslist, I've gotten some apartment leads from there. The job itself is about 10 miles north of Boston (Somerville area), so I will look for a place near to where I work. From what I've seen on craig and other places, its easy to get from the suburbs to the city proper in the morning and vice versa in the evening - not so easy to do the opposite via mass transit at least.

I'm going up to look at apartments early next week. I've found a ridiculous range of prices from 550-1500 a month for similar places in the same neighborhood - that confuses me a bit. I suppose I'll have to go up and actually see for myself.

Thanks for all the input, and like I said, if any of you actually live up there, let me know and I'll buy you a few rounds in exchange for showing me around a bit.

I'm from the Boston-area, and happen to love it there; and I also have that "really annoying" accent. There's great shopping, especially around the area of Quincy Market, P-Town right across the harbor, summer concerts at the Hatch-shell, soccer & rugby games on the Common, tons of colleges to check out, plenty of pubs, etc.

I hope you have fun!

Well, I know that Boston is a great sports town.

It's the home of the Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins and New England Patriots. Yep, I would be going to some of them games, given the chance.

Thank god, if he existed, that the celtics suck right now. I dont anyone could handle the smug clouds covering Boston if they had championship competitive teams is baseball, basketball, AND football at the same time.

Well the Red Sox won the World Series three years ago and are playing excellent baseball right now. The Patriots have won 3 Superbowls in the 90s. I'd say Boston's a pretty good sports town right now.

*but I know what you mean*

Boston is outrageously priced. You should try finding a place outside of the city.

My cousin had a condo on the Back Bay. If you'd really like I can ask her for some info.

Bon Voyage, Yellow! Congrats for getting out of the Mid-Atlantic region (well... at least I don't like it...)!

I hope you've found a job that suits your needs and, more importantly, that suits you.

Aargh, had to postpone the trip for a week while my new company and old company hammered out details of my confidentiality agreement.

At leasts its settled with no major contentions.

Will let you know what I find when I finally do make the trip to look for apartments.

Thanks for the advice and well wishes all Very Happy
