If you don’t like banks then what....a rusty coffee can and a shovel? Or do you pay for your next months WoW subscription with a large mouth bass? Allot of good in this world and there is a lot of bad. On my priority list of things to fix banks are pretty low. With the internet age in full swing we have never had as many options and competition for customers is pretty high. Credit cards... now thats something to complain about.

You can get pre paid credit cards at Rite Aid or CVS to use online. I never use my bank card or credit cards online (except for department store cards like Victoria Secret, etc). But I still wouldn't recommend not having a bank. At least have a savings account at a local branch or something.

I said "the banks as we know them", not "banks".

I was mostly responding to the overall negitive opinion of banks in this thread and including the statement "banks are evil" Which is why i didnt quote your words directly. Most importatly my response was mostly in jest. One thing i did forget to mention was the interst in book you mentioned "Case Against the Fed." I think i will pick that up when i get chance. Thanks for posting it.

WaMu sucks, BofA sucks, Wells Fargo sucks. They all pretty much suck.

My answer: credit unions. Very Happy

It's bad enough that you can't do ANYTHING unless you're at your home branch. It's bad enough that if you move out of state you can't get to your money because now you're in a "different" WaMu system.

I am laughing at this, because I can go to another COUNTRY and still get my money. How the hell has this bank survived, if you can't access your money from a different state? What the hell happens when people go on holiday? Or move state? Do they have to move their money as well, or open a different account?

I was thinking of the same thing Manic. I have two bank accounts, one is with TCF, a small local bank, which is what I do a majority of my banking with. The other is Bank of America, which is where I opened up my first bank account when I was a kid. BoA, I just use for savings or emergencies. I have a debit card from them and can bank in any state or where there is an ATM. Same with TCF. Because TCF is a smaller branch, they let me use the ATMs at 7-11 for free.
About two years ago, I opened an account with a Credit Union that was promoted through my work place. Biggest money mistake I ever made. They did this delightful thing if you were enrolled in direct deposit...the check would be in your account, it would show up online as in your account, you can call it in and it would say you have it in your account, but it would not officially be in your account until noon or later that day. So if I payed some bills that morning I had about two or three checks getting an NSF. That is 30 bucks a pop for each, plus whatever my landlord or insurance company is going to charge me for a bounced check.
When I called to ask them how this is possible, they said that I should never use online or phone information to balance my check book. WTF? Then why is it there? Yeah, that lasted about three months and I went back to banks. Credit Unions also have real shitty customer service, in my experience.

That's one thing that happened to me. I moved to a different state and couldn't get to my money until I visited my home branch and closed the account . . . in person. I swear, WaMu must be in the stone age. They're worse then BofA. At least you know up front that they have shitty customer service. WaMu is nice to your face and pretends that they have the best customer service there is.

I'm STILL paying for fees that they slapped me with because they set up my account incorrectly (and I couldn't fix because I couldn't get to my home branch). *grumble*

My credit union is the exact opposite. My online banking is always up to the minute accurate, and I get really good customer service at every FCU I walk into. Maybe you just have some crappy ones where you're at, or maybe I just have some really good ones where I'm at. Smile
