Hi everyone.
I just found this site tonight by searching "atheist forums" in google. Don't know why I never thought to try before...
What to say?
I'm 22, taking some time off from being a student at the moment, trying to figure out what to do with life... I was studying English but now I'm thinking of studying Biology or maybe becoming a medical laboratory technologist. Who knows?
I was raised in a Pentecostal home and my family is pretty devout. I deconverted the summer after high school graduation. It was during that time that I first encountered arguments against Christianity and reasons why the religion didn't make sense.
In the years following, I was a theist of some sort for most if that time. I was pretty interested in neopaganism for a long time, and eventually identified as a pantheist, and eventually I ended up identifying as an atheist. However, I'm "in the closet" about that to all but a couple close friends. I'm not ready for my family to know. I still verbally affirm my faith to them when it comes up, but they do know that many of my views contradict the church's teachings. Maybe eventually I tell them. I hope so, but I expect it would damage our relationship permanently.
Anyway, I thought I'd register, just to add my voice. Let people know that there are more atheists than they might think.
Take care. _________________ "People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true."

Man, I do hear ya. I went though college nice and quite about atheist-anything because I would risk having college funding cut if they were to find out. I was going to tell them after college but then I heard her saying that she wouldn't be around any atheist. So I crammed it all back in the closet and got over the upset. Do you think you'll ever tell them?
I fully support studying biology (disclosure: I am biased though). Try and get an emphasis in Cell and Molecular (or however the college will phrase that), it looks nice on transcripts, plus its damn cool. Medical tech certified or research lab tech?
Not to be a bastard and ask personal questions though, but how is having the absence of belief affecting your relationships? Have you had mothers state that you are never to see their daughter again? _________________ Theory guides. Experiment decides, bitch

Thanks for the welcomes!
PoliticalHumanist: I like trees and green is my favourite colour!
Bates: I really don't know if I'll ever tell them. I have told mom that I don't consider myself Pentecostal, and that seemed to hurt her enough. It would be bad enough telling her that I'm not Christian, I really can't even begin to imagine how she and dad would react if I said I didn't even believe in god.
If I major in bio I might go on to be a high school teacher. For lab, I'd like to be the type that analyses samples for diagnoses and stuff. Or work for the Canadian Blood Services. That would be cool.
As for personal relationships, thankfully, the only people who know of my apostacy and atheism are friends who care about and repect me, regardless of what I may or may not believe.
